The word "Trance" is just a buzzword. Just like you wouldn't call American bands like Pearl Jam or Alice in Chains, Rock and roll, you can't really call what tiesto spins as just "Trance".
The term trance was coined with the opening of R&S Records in Ghent, Belgium and Harthouse/Eye Q Records in Frankfurt, Germany. R&S defined the sound early on with singles like "Energy Flash" by Joey Beltram, "The Ravesignal" by CJ Bolland, and others by Robert Leiner, Sun Electric, and Aphex Twin. It refered to a music that used metallic synthesizer lines, and repeated drum beats, putting the listener in a trance...almost no melody was utilized. This is TRANCE music.
The classic German sound had changed somewhat though, and the term "progressive" trance gained favor to describe influences from the smoother end of house and Euro dance.
I know I'm being anal, it's just driving me insane.
