Lab 4 over Impulz Festival

There is no better way to kick off the festival season for 2004, with what is usually our favorite event of the entire year - Outdoor Impulz @ Bussloo, HOLLAND....

As per usual, the production and the organisation of Outdoor Impulz was second to no other festival in the world that we have ever had the privilege of working with so far. The vibe of the entire event was also enhanced thankfully, by the fact that Holland won the football on Saturday - as it seems that the Dutch are even more fanatical about their football the Brits!

Firstly, apologies go out to the hundreds of people who missed the LAB4 Live set due to a change in the set times from 5am back to the earlier slot of 12.15am. Although this change was made about 10 days ago, the unfortunate oversight by both the LAB4 camp and UDC was that timetables had already been printed - and although every effort was made to give notice of these changes, there were still hundreds of people who were not aware of this and as a result, missed the set.

The second and main apology goes out to those of you who did actually catch the set and were no doubt just as disappointed as we were, due to the absolutely absymal sound levels that dropped by more than 10 decibels lower than the previous DJ when LAB4 hit the stage.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO NOTE HERE THAT THIS WAS BY NO MEANS THE FAULT OF ANYONE AT UDC, nor could anything have been done by LAB4 themselves - or indeed the poor sound engineer who unfortunately had to cope with frayed tempers from the LAB4 camp as well as a load of insults and hassles from a constant stream of punters insisting the volume go up - all whilst the poor guy was still trying to do his job to the best of his ability.

It was quite simply a case of the LAB4 curse of bad luck that hits us occasionally in regards to sound - that for the first time ever at a Dutch outdoor festival, the government decided to involve themselves and send environmental health officials to check sound levels at midnight, just as LAB4 were preparing to go on stage.

Although after midnight the legal sound limit is 98db (decibels), these 'anti-fun' officials (that's the polite term we will use for them for printed material!) insisted for some reason on putting limiters on the sound system at 87db - 11 decibels lower than the legal allowance. (To put this into context for you, a moped speeding by actually measures 85db on one of these meters)....

As soon as these officials finally left the HQ Arena to go and then put a dampener on the mainstage also, the levels were put back up to 99db - but unfortunately this was just after the LAB4 set was over, and after hundreds of people had understandably left the arena because they could easily have conversationss over top of the sound system without missing a word - which as we all know is simply not normal, or even acceptable for a clubbing atmosphere.

Well the 'anti-fun' officials again returned, this time with plyers and bolts so that the limiters could not be adjusted by UDC staff for the duration of the event, and we all stood and watched in disbelief as winding the sound down so far was literally winding the crowd down at just the same rate....

By 2.30am though, the sound drama had finally been balanced out, just in time for Eddie Halliwell to hit the stage and bring the crowd back to life, and instilling a vibe to the arena that it truly deserved, with one of the most impressive sets of the entire event.

The highlight of the night though, without shadow of a doubt was the only international DJ other than Yoji Biomehanika that LAB4 has ever fully supported and pushed through this website over the past 4 to 5 years - Finland's own superstar DJ, PROTEUS - who this year has recently signed to UDC Management for the Benelux, and to LAB4 Management exclusively for the rest of the world.

Having become one of the fastest ever artists to speed his way up through the ranks of Impulz / Dance Valley / HQ events - and equalling Yoji Biomehanika's skill in entertaining the crowd (although in a completely different way), seeing PROTEUS do his thing in full masked costume complete with whips, and surrounded by six totally hot and completely naked women - sent the crowd into a complete and absolute frenzy and went the whole way towards having the night 'Finnish' on an absolute high note.... This man has BIG things coming his way in terms of a successful career on a world wide level - if you have still not seen him, then it is time to start making plans to do so!!

Special thanks and big love goes out to our all time favourite stage manager - Sander of UDC - for always being so consistently on the case and reliable....

Love and Hugs also to our old and dear friend Ricardo (the original 'Daddy Dance Valley' who's vision started it all) and to his brother Murph - followed by thanks and regards to Harm, Darrien and Andrea - the organisers of Impulz Outdoor, and to all their staff who work tirelessly to ensure everyone's comfort, safety and enjoyment, whilst also keeping it together enough to keep such a massive festival running smoothly (not much anyone can do about the Government's 'anti-fun police')....

Finally, big shouts out to a few of our favourite hard core Dutch LAB4 fans - Linda Claasens and Ruud Speur, Martine and Edwin, Danny at Party Vibes, Cider Ville and Sasha F - as well as sweet little Minnie from Amsterdam.... We love you guys, sorry we missed you this time round but look forward to seeing you all at Hard House Academy on the 23rd October....
