That's me in the corner, That's me in the spotlight, I'm Losing my religion, Trying to keep up with you ,And I don't know if I can do it, Oh no, I've said too much,I haven't said enough, I thought that I heard you laughing, I thought that I heard you sing, I think I thought I saw you try.
But that was just a dream, That was just a dream, But that was just a dream, Try, cry, why try? That was just a dream ,Just a dream, just a dream, Dream

from what i've read so far (mainly whirlpool.net.au forums), the g-mail spam filters are working quite well (gmails own, aswell as ones the user defines).
believe it or not, there are some people who deliberately set out to test these things...i.e. ppl getting multiple gmail accounts, keeping one spam free, running off to numerous porn mailing lists and signing up their gmail account in an attempt to test the effectiveness of gmails spam filters.
regarding the ads that you will receive while reading gmail, they are all non-intrusive banners, no popup windows. the way gmail decides which banners to show to you is by electronically skimming through the contents & headers of your emails, and if keywords are picked up, lets be general and choose the word 'soccer', if EA games was releasing a new version of FIFA, then they might pay google to show banners on the pages of everyone who has an email that contains the word soccer.
some say this is an intrusion of privacy...you decide.
