Frankly - I'm surprised that more DJ's don't do this. What a great way to emphasize the next track!

IMO that's a cheap ass trick. However, I am a firm believer that a dj needs to do whatever they can to mask and cover up their mistakes.

I was recording the other day and was using a half echo. I only wanted to use it for about 4 beats and when I went to hit the button on my 500 it stuck. I had to let it roll 16 more beats to not make it look like shit. Towards the end of the sixteen beats I dropped the bass out, then kicked the bass in as I turned the echo off. Still shit IMO, but most people wouldn't notice and many would think I did it on purpose.

I have seen him do that drop in after the record ends before. I would never do it, because I am not that worried about getting my tracks beat matched, but if you can't beat match or are struggling with a couple of tracks, go for it. It's a good cover up, and the non-dj's (95-98% of the room) will not notice that you really messed up.

I must admit, I wasn't asking for an autograph, but I have given him demos on two occasions. Once in Miami for WMC and once here in Denver (last time he was here). Both times security tried to stop me from giving them to him, and both times he accepted them anyway. In Miami @Space the booth is pretty high up. He held his hand down for a good 30 seconds while I maneouvered around the big ass security guy. In Denver security told me, "You can't do that". Paul said, "No, it's ok, I'll take it." However, after that set, he walked by and failed to shake my hand or give me a high five or whatever when I held my hand out. So I tapped him on the back to not look like a dipshit. I was a little disappointed in him for that, but, whatever.

Maybe he is not putting 100% into every small show he does anymore

Just mindlessly go with the fact that he is god and everything will be fine.

so everytime I see a shitty dj I guess I should go tour with him to actually find out if he sucks or not.

if there was some sort of flow to the tracks, I would have given him some credit, but it seemed like he cued up a few tracks in winamp, set it on random and left the 15 second fade in/out option on.

I odn't think there is a way to convince me otherwise, I prolly will see him at wmc, and maybe some other large venues with other djs, but I also might be taking a large shit in the bathroom at around the same time....so who knows.

Well as a self proclaimed Oakenfold Addict, its very hard to defend him, when so many people say he 'sucks'

all i can say, is that i know proper mixing, and i know proper sets when i hear them(im proud of my cd/live sets collections). The last time i saw him, June, he was great, i had a great time, and the general concensious on this board, was that he played a good set(3hrs).

1 - Oakenfold has never been the best mixer, he usually had super short transitions to emphisis the next track, and make you forget about the last one.

2 - If people say he has no passion anymore, then why ask him to continue to produce? Doesnt production take way more effort than djing? You dont just book 10 shows a month, plus have a mix cd coming out, while working on an artist album, run a record company, while composing music for games/movies, without having passion.

3 - track selection is the most important part of a set. Forget mixing, because who wants to stand there and listen to some guy mix 3 songs together, just to say you heard it?

i say, let the guy do what he wants, and let people listen to him. If you dont like it, dont go. Simple. If you are right(meaning he sucks) people will stop going, and his salary will go down, some how making you happy.

Is he taking the 40K out of your pocket? no. then stfu

edit: as for the people saying "lets see you do better" common guys, thats not a fair argument, he(oakey) is a professional, and as consumers, we are given the right to judge.
