althought "A rare treat" (EM from 97) was very wide, i didnt even like it. I thought Danny Howells did a much better job of an eclectic set in 2002, give it a listen.
i think this type of mixing is awsome, because it instantly makes you forget about the last song, and instantly lets you enjoy the current song. you dont have to worry about how the two songs interact. |
I like the tracks and the variety on "A Rare Treat", however the mixing and the programming is definitely lacking. I agree that a quick mix on certain tracks is necessary. For example, Brainchild's Symmetry C (Lange Breaks Mix) doesn't lend well to beat match mixing. On the same token, Oakenfold does this way too much and, in some instances, it's not necessary. I don't think he's very good technically, but I still enjoy his music, especially the Essential Mix World Tour era.
On top of that, I heard he played a cd here one of the times he played. Not only did he play a previously mixed cd, but one with several errors on it. That I cannot respect. If you are getting paid good money to play a party, play the party. Very few people in the know will argue that Oakenfold is one of the best technical mixers, but he does select good tracks and usually programs them well. He plays to the crowd, when into it, such as he was this past year at WMC, playing Space. I really enjoyed his set there, even though there were flaws. He was more consistent than usual, of late, and he was into it, playing to the crowd.
I must say the fact that he is in the top 10 dj's in the world, at least on djlist.com, is disgusting. Many dj's out there are better than him and more deserving of that spot.
