I don’t mean to be a chin-stroking, bourbon-coke drinking party pooping critique but fuck I had a piss poor time. Last night reminded me of why I dislike attending these huge things. Joint was packed, moreover, overly flocked with arrogant dicks that pushed their way through the crowds, obliged to making me smell their armpits while they barge pass. Really, there was no space to breathe, let alone shuffle my feet 2cm to the left nor right. Did I mention about the crowd again? Directly in front of me, bogans, whistling to every second beat and every breakdown that came out of the speakers. What the fuck is this? DJ Alligator? My left, some obese dude, sweating profusely while desperately seeking somebody with money to share half a pill with. “No”, I had to tell him for the last time. “I don’t want to share a superman strengthed fairy winged pink-blue whatever dolphin with you! And yes. I do know his name is Dj Saaaaashaaaaaaa” My right, some chick wearing a very low-let me show you half of my ass-back leopard skin dress. Maam, certainly, if you have the body, flaunt it but when you want to start playing rub an tug with your 50 year old bf, grab a room. It’s cheaper. and Lo and behold, there’s one of these at every big party. Some anorexic dude with a few teeth missing behind me had to take his shirt off. That was the last straw, I needed a breather and went walkies.
Anyway, Sasha. New look apple mac Sasha. I certainly hope Apple are throwing in the moolah for this, cause damn me that’s one fine marketing ploy.
Really, I’m still bitter sweet about this direction. With a laptop, you take away the intricacies of mixing. Automatic beat matching, automatic harmonic mixing. Its no longer an emotionally driven thinking man’s game [I know, that’s an oxymoron but I hold pride in knowing what records go with what, and working out in my head keys 5pm faster or slower to fit in the current record]. Now, if automating all those processes were to increase the stage performance, to a zabiela type caliber, fantastic! But all I heard was an overly-accentuated use of multi banded filtering. Perhaps he remixed, I’m unsure. I heard different versions of housecat - “watching cars go by” [2nd tune, not near the end] and youngsters – “smile” without vocals and extra melody synths. Maybe someone can clarify. Few technical difficulties also encountered, what you guys reckon? My bet’s on the Mac running out of processing power. I got kicks out of that, I’m so deprived. I still like records. I missed that animation like this.

Anyway, overall, his set was decent lil too club driven/hard for my liking. Can’t say I was really moved. But everybody seemed to be having a ball. Would have liked to have stayed for kasey, but twas too beat. Hope y’all had a great time

Haha... Jaykue, jaded to a T... er... J...(?)
Anyway, completely not pumped for the evening, I had several preconceived notions concerning the night, based upon previous experience etc etc etc
a). Crowd would be a large and... 'diverse' cross section of the clubbing public, incorporating music lovers, drug lovers, party lovers, posers and general weird people.
b). It would be packed. Rammed to the rafters.
c). It is Melbourne, whereby the unspoken word resounds; Bang it out.
Despite this, I hoped that set harking towards his Involver soundscapes would at least begin a progression into other areas of the diverse genre. Alas, I received a so-so response. Flashes of brilliance yes, perhaps my interests were skewed in the wrong direction, sending myself towards disappointment before I even got in. Christ thats a little pessimistic...
Ahem...
Upon arrival it became abundantly clear that expectations a). and b). were a reality. So that just leaves c).
Phil K, what he does, he does well... queing up for the cloakroom listening to Orbital's Perfect Sunrise (Stereo 8 on the mix) suggested briefly that perhaps point c). would turn out to be false. However, it wasn't long before I noticed my ribs rattling as the bass got lower and lower and bigger and bigger and harder and harder. Yeah, na... good, but not what I was after. Seemed as though I was in the minority, dancefloor was packed and heaving.
And then there was Sasha. Yah... out of the gates like Makybe Diva, with a bang and a thud. No build up. The argument goes that its a party, so build ups are non-essential. Hmm... his set left me bittersweet, tracks I knew and loved but the Gestalt of the set, something was missing? Although chucking Mylo's In my arms as the encore was genius (love that track... ah...). So I was left in a weird middle ground. It was odd.
The Youngsters - Smile (Sasha Edit)
...yeah, remember this one.
spooky - belong [sasha edit]
was nice to hear on that loud system.
Viton & Stel - Wooden Swordz (Kosmas Epsilon Remix)
...what? really. Fark, love this track, spewing that I missed it... somehow.
Felix Da Housecat - Watching Cars Go By (Sasha Edit)
...well dur, very large track indeed. Like it more now than before, thanks to that sound system.
Aloud - Sex and Sun Pt. 1 (Eric Prydz Mix)
...right, another I missed, which is annoying. and the rest blah blah blah.
Might I add:
Nikola Gala - Swing 2 Harmony
Mic Burns - See Me Fall (I'm pretty sure it was MDK vs proluctors mix, prolly re-edited heavily)
Some Ricardo Villalobos track whose name completely escapes me now.
But yeah, fun was had.

Heh, made sense at 8 this morning I guess....
But yeah, that was an awesome night, easily one of the best sets I've heard this year. Was never dull and was much more driving and involved than most Sasha sets I've heard. Started off kinda slowly, but once he got going he didn't stop. I don't listen to prog all that much these days, but I was fucking blown away. He more than made up for his so-so set at QBH a couple of years ago.
Oh and can we talk about Kasey Taylor? I know that most of you guys left before he started but my god, the man would have to be the best DJ this city has ever produced. None of that plodding, Vapour circa 2002 sound just relentless, driving, meaty prog that sounded even better situated 2 metres from the speakers. I thought that following Sasha would have been impossible but he kept the dance-floor packed till we left just before 7.30. Fucking awesome stuff.
And JayKuE while I do agree with you that it was packed in there, for once it didn't bother me in the slightest. The vibe in there was amongst the best I've ever experienced in a club - everyone was just as pumped and as interested in the music at the end of the 4 hours as they were at the beginning. I've never seen quite so much love for a DJ as there was for Sasha in that room last night.
So yeah, had a blast. Good meeting up with the usual TAs again too.
