the thing that impresses me the most about pvd's mixing is his timing. the beats may be off slightly once in a while, but his timing is almost perfect. the reason why i think pvd is a better mixer than lets say, armin, or markus, is because he is able to mix through so many more tracks in one night than either of them. most dj's, (including myself) usually stick with the intro outro mixing, sometimes mixing into the break, or something like that (i know techno/house/breaks and other genres have amazing djs who do various tricks etc. but i'm talking strictly trance/prog). pvd is able to pull off transitions like no other. just compare a 5 hour pvd set with a 5 hour avb set. i can guarantee you that pvd will have at least 20-30 more tracks in his list. mixing through tracks that quickly with trance is much harder than w/ techno etc. mostly because of the melodic elements and the way the buildups and breakdowns are positioned; it also leads him to be more susceptible to messing up. imo, mixing prog. is very predictable and easy. most tracks are very percussive in the intro outro, and the melodies are somewhat abstract. everything is long and drawn out making it easier to time mixes. don't get me wrong, i love prog. but its built around subtle changes in the track making it hard to just drop something in outta nowhere unless if its an accapella or something.
with all that being said....
PVD is a superior mixer compared to armin, markus, tiesto, or any other trance dj and He knows how to throw down a banging party.
