WORD

Let's focus on a more hopefull future, I would say:

- Özgür Can
- Perry O'Neil
- Menno de Jong
- Mike Foyle

To name a few, all with a new style and IMO good music selections which sounds rather 'new' and they mix well too!

How can you say that? (I would call you an idiot if I didn't know better but I think I do )

In your opinion somebody with 'zero rhytmic talents' and a good nose for good tracks can be a good DJ> haha, I wanna see your face when sombody mixes good tracks very bad in to each other, you wont be amused, ... believe me!

Flame me if you will, but I honestly find Ozgur Can's sound to be really boring and repetitive. Its just the same freaking loop, over and over again with the majority of his productions.

And dont even get me started on Probspot. Blueberry was an awesome track until we started hearing it in every single Probspot production!

u CAN overcome mediocre mixing with incredible trax.

that's tiesto for you

ANYONE can get behind the decks and play their favorite and most popular trance tunes. heck, if you can't beatmatch well, just pray people love what you're playing!

the dj has to have REALLY great mixing skills so the transitions are smooth. this gives a set flow and a totally different feeling - completion? i think it's what makes a set an experience, a journey rather than just some good tunes.

when i'm out at a club, sometimes it is difficult to hear transitions over the sound system and the dj has REALLY got to be off to notice. ever walk out of a party and think: that was a great set but there was something missing? i think it's generally the mixing. at times i get to listen to a recording of the set and that's when i hear how 'off' the mixing was.

i am completely blown away by so many of paul's transitions, his mixing skills are top notch. no, he's not always perfect, but i am generally very impressed after every time i see him, and look forward to the next time i'll see him.

i also have a lot of respect for him because he DOES play a lot of tracks and different genres that most djs don't have the guts to do. he plays what he likes, and i like what he plays and how he plays it. his track selection and progression throughout the set are generally pretty good from year to year, but imo 2003 was absolute sh*t (a whole other topic). i have sets from 1992 until now and i enjoy listening to them all.

the thing that impresses me the most about pvd's mixing is his timing. the beats may be off slightly once in a while, but his timing is almost perfect. the reason why i think pvd is a better mixer than lets say, armin, or markus, is because he is able to mix through so many more tracks in one night than either of them. most dj's, (including myself) usually stick with the intro outro mixing, sometimes mixing into the break, or something like that (i know techno/house/breaks and other genres have amazing djs who do various tricks etc. but i'm talking strictly trance/prog). pvd is able to pull off transitions like no other. just compare a 5 hour pvd set with a 5 hour avb set. i can guarantee you that pvd will have at least 20-30 more tracks in his list. mixing through tracks that quickly with trance is much harder than w/ techno etc. mostly because of the melodic elements and the way the buildups and breakdowns are positioned; it also leads him to be more susceptible to messing up. imo, mixing prog. is very predictable and easy. most tracks are very percussive in the intro outro, and the melodies are somewhat abstract. everything is long and drawn out making it easier to time mixes. don't get me wrong, i love prog. but its built around subtle changes in the track making it hard to just drop something in outta nowhere unless if its an accapella or something.

with all that being said....

PVD is a superior mixer compared to armin, markus, tiesto, or any other trance dj and He knows how to throw down a banging party.

I think PVDs mixing is very good. You have to remember that most of the time he mixes the next track in very quickly and sometimes doesnt play the full track so he can squeeze more tunes into the set. Tiesto's mixing is not usually that good... and as for Oakie.. better not go there.

I'm not gonna flame you
I respect everybody's opinion although I don't agree with you about Ozgur's productions, ...

Probspot tracks are indeed a little boring, but there soms tracks of his repetoire that really do it for me. (Blueberry, Midnight and Foreplay)

Re: The Paul Van Dyk Discussion

Topic # 1

PVD for me is about his kind of sound and his style, not perfect mixing and for an angel.

Track selection is usually spot on taking the mood of the set in the right direction. But his kind of sound is "crisp" and "sharp".

Occasionally do hear a non perfect transition, which obviously is a bit of a bummer.

It's his type of sound which does it for me, hence "Dyk Technique" :P

That's why I'm not devastated if he doesn't drop "Angel" during a set because the kind of sound coming out of the speakers is making me wet anyway :P

He also knows how to make his next track "hint" during the mix...to just bring it in enough that you can barely hear what's about to come.

also noticed some tracks speed up and slow down barely perceivably which sounds cool.

He does some other very cool sound effects i like, such as a bass "swooping" down - kinda sounds like the death star about to fire it's laser.

Topic # 2

Definitely. "Columbia" and "Out There" are definitely harsher faster more biting tracks, and some of my favourites.

"Nothing but you" is much more sweet and smooth.

I like his harsher stuff
