She will lead a difficult life, but hopefully she can recieve reconstructive surgery that will allow her to at least eat and breathe properly.

I feel sympathy for her, and her family. However, I do not feel bad for her because of her appearance, I feel bad for her because of the troubles that will come from close minded assholes who cannot see past looks. She will be mocked and teased, people will stare, she will never be treated normally. She may not be able to learn as quickly as desired, and she may not be able to fully appreciate sound, smell, speech, or a tasty meal. This goes beyond her appearance. It isn't what she shows on the outside, it's how it will make her feel on the inside. And that is why I have sympathy

As callous as this may sound, sometimes I think it would be far more humane to allow babies born with such horendous birth defects to die quickly and peacefully immediately after being born. I don't care what anyone says, sometimes the trauma of such an existence isn't worth inflicting on the baby and the human being it will develop into. If I were a parent and I were to find out that my child would be so malformed, I don't think I'd have to heart to let it suffer by keeping it alive. While these parents have gone through with the birth - and it's ultimately their decision - I'm not sure that I can agree with the mantra that any sort of existence is preferable to the alternative of a painless death. I mean, fanciful expectations aside, what kind of future does that human being actually have?

If it was discovered that my future wife's fetus had extremely severe disformaties, I would have wanted to abort it.

I can't in my wildest imagination understand why people want to devote their entire grown up life nursing their 100% disabled child. A child who's every breath is pain and agony...

Agreed. I am generally pro-choice anyways but if I were that child, I would hold it against my parents for not aborting me. My heart goes out to that family but the fact of the matter is all the doors of life are pretty much shut tight when you have a condition like that. Jobs, social life, dating- virtually everything. She even has to eat through her stomach!

Its also sad to think she will be contemplating suicide every morning she gets up for the rest of her adult life. I know I would.
