Long Island: --Hofstra -- mediocre private school; much drinking --Adelphi -- more mediocrity; --Dowling -- more mediocrity and you can actually see your money being flushed down the toilet --SUNY Stonybrook -- good value for your money; academics can be above average if you seek them out and work hard but also easy to fall into the party trap; 420 friendly

don't forget about Manhattan college too (it's actually in the bronx, lol)

Okay okay okay....done it all so I'll try and help. I attended a Community College for my first year in NJ, took 36 credits, 27 transfered to East Carolina Univsity (making me an out of student at a state school) this still kept me at freshman status, since I needed 32 credits per year, but it wasn't that big of a deal. I lived 2 years on campus, and then 2 years off. If you live in a "college town" housing is all over the place and cheap also. So if your looking for housing live as close to campus as possible, if it is a school with no on-campus housing then there should be tons of housing around to accomidate all the students. I paid out of state tuition all four years in NC. If she wants to pay in-state for NY you have to be a resident here for a year, including living here and working here. Now in NC you could get back your money for out of state if you could prove that you had lived and worked in the state for over a year. So I could have gotten money back if I had lived AND worked in the state but I never worked in the state. Also for the private schools, they have more options to give money out for, it is not based on grades so much as income, major, etc. Also (I am out of control)she could go to a Community College for a year to keep cost down, you'll only be taking general classes so those should all transfer and then she can build up a GPA, get finacial aid, and figure out what she wants to do. Never let the cost of college stop you, just do it. Hope this way to long post helps

Merd thats exactly what I tried explaining to her to do. She could go to Bklyn, which is a very good school, its the cheapest good school in NY, take all the core classes (English, Math, Social Sciences, Electives) than move on to something bigger and better.

It really makes sense though, and Brooklyn is a good choice it seems to me. Sometimes I wish I'd gone cheap for 2 yrs too instead of going to NYU right away. But I love NYU anyway! Columbia sux!
