First off, Unity is dead. Mourn it and move on.
Secondly, the Guv/Kool Haus is a great club. I have never seen a metal detector there nor have I had to wait any more than a minute to be served. Some gay guys get mad and have a bad experience no matter what. Toronto is cheaper than New York and has friendlier and hotter guys, so, people will always come to Toronto Pride.
Thirdly, these are PRISM events, not Toronto Pride events. There is no connection whatsoever between PRISM and Pride Toronto except that they happen on the same week. Pride Ball Toronto, the non-profit that organized last year's Pride Ball will not be involved this year.
The circuit community world-wide is not exactly thriving. Without appealing to a more diverse audience (including younger people, people with different body types and different musical tastes), it will die. As a way of life, the circuit scene is unsustainable.
Logically it should be held at the CNE? How is that logical? Sure the CNE has a lot of space but from a cost stand-point it is a horrible venue. We have to sell an additional 1,500 tickets just to make up the difference in costs between the CNE and Kool Haus or The Docks. In the old days the CNE would negotiate on the cost but those days are gone.
There are only two licensed and insured venues downtown that are big enough to handle PRISM and they are the Guv/Kool Haus and The Docks. Until someone builds another comparably-sized venue downtown, the parties will be at one of those two venues. |
If the Unity founders didnt sniff all the proceeds up their nose Unity would still be here. Anyway, i understand what you are saying but there is a new generation of gay guys out there that will soon take over the stagnant scene. And i agree no new club has taken off because promotion sucks and the placement of the clubs suck as well.
I was just saying i personally love the CNE gounds and logically from a person attending such parties that would be ideal...but to me the money isssue isnt in my hands, its in the hands of the party promoters...
And i beg to differ that the circuit scene is dieing, because Black and Blue, Southern Decadence, White Party, HotAlanta and others are becoming huge money making machines around North America.
Anyway, as gay culture evolves other format DJ's can come out and draw crowds...but at the moment we have to settle for shitty house DJ"s like Tracy Crappy Young headlining the same tired events...its a formula and it works, because older established circuit come to expect it.

I agree. I loved going to massive parties at the CNE in the past.

Attendence at Black and Blue, Southern Decadence and the White Party (both the one in Palm Springs and the one in Miami) have been shrinking substantially each year for the past 5 years. These events are becoming shadows of their former selves. Hotlanta went bankrupt in 2003.

So how do we get to that next level? Is Toronto ready for a gay trance event?
