why do you even bother to understand     
although....Jay is right that in many cases women are forced into these relationships....I have no problem with polygamy though...rather for religous reasons or because you just like to be nagged.
Personally, I don't know why anyone would want more then one wife..wait...found a reason....I'm going to marry like 10 really old women and when they die I get their money....oh yeah....easy street here I come.
