I disagree. While there are some things that are nearly universally appealing to western ears (eg basic ET chromatic scale stuff, or 70-160BPM) for mathematical or biological reasons, within those very broad boundaries its pretty subjective stuff. So what's art and what's not? Clearly not something we're going to agree on here - its an age-old argument across every artform. I mean, for sure there is crap dance music and good dance music, but does it take more talent to make belfunk than it does to make 'jump the next train' or 'as the rush comes'? I'd argue that the answer isn't neccesarily a given.
herein lies the problem - most of us would agree that the most commerical tracks are not the best artistically, and in fact there's almost an inverse relationship. in terms of commercial success, cheeseball vocal trance is to 'good' progressive what beethoven is to banging on pots and pans (or at least its nearest counterpart, Einstürzende Neubauten) :P.
So yeah. Not trying to wind people up - just thinking that we like what we like for a variety of reasons, and quite often we can't help it anyways.
