The pair of the OP140A emitter with an OP550A phototransistor where chosen since they are available devices with a high power ratting. The photo emitter is rated at 50mA forward current so the device was operated at 45mA to produce the maximum output light without damaging the device.

The emitter current was the output of the measurement transducer. This current was based on the incident light which was dependant on the distance from transducer to the object. Increasing the distance reduced the incident light while decreasing the distance increased the incident light. The relationship of incident light to output current is seen in graph 1.

Two configurations where experimented with. The original configuration shown on the right in figure 2 uses one phototransistor and one photodiode. An alternate configuration was used to counteract the effect of ambient noise on the detector system. The alternate configuration was chosen to reduce the effect of ambient light by increasing the emitted infrared light. The result of the enhanced detector results in a higher output from the detector.
