I'd have to echo what trancaholic said. I'd just use yum (or your updater of choice) to install xmms for you. It will resolve those dependencies and you won't have to worry about it. I'm not sure why glib was placed in the local folder of usr, I'm pretty sure the "normal" place for it is in the regular library repository of /usr/lib not /usr/local/lib, although when you configured and compiled it, it should have put a link to where ever it decided to install itself.

I also had to install GNU gettext before I could install glib. I'm backtracking a bit in hope of perhaps finding a muck up?

I downloaded the /gettext folder from their website and these are the contents:

quote:

[root@cpe-66-68-111-30 /]# cd /home/imranz/gettext/
[root@cpe-66-68-111-30 gettext]# ls
gettext-0.10.40.tar.gz gettext-0.13.tar.gz gettext-0.14.3.tar.gz.sig gettext-runtime-0.13.1.bin.woe32.zip
gettext-0.11.2.tar.gz gettext-0.13.tar.gz.sig gettext-0.14.4.tar.gz gettext-runtime-0.13.1.bin.woe32.zip.sig
gettext-0.11.5.tar.gz gettext-0.14.1.tar.gz gettext-0.14.4.tar.gz.sig gettext-tools-0.13.1.bin.woe32.zip
gettext-0.12.1.tar.gz gettext-0.14.1.tar.gz.sig gettext-0.14.5.tar.gz gettext-tools-0.13.1.bin.woe32.zip.sig
gettext-0.13.1/ gettext-0.14.2.tar.gz gettext-0.14.5.tar.gz.sig
gettext-0.13.1.tar.gz gettext-0.14.2.tar.gz.sig gettext-0.14.tar.gz
gettext-0.13.1.tar.gz.sig gettext-0.14.3.tar.gz gettext-0.14.tar.gz.sig
[root@cpe-66-68-111-30 gettext]#

I guess I was being lazy and didn't do much research before installing it so I made an educated guess, and as you can see, I only unzipped "gettext-0.13.1.tar.gz" then ran ./coonigure -> make etc. Did I mess up there?

@NeoPhono: If I understand correctly, are you saying its a better idea to install from and rpm package as opposed to the source code?

Well, apparently mandrake has a very easy software wizard thing that I can use so I guess I'll undo what I just did and use that. Still, thanks for the help guys.

I just re-read one of your posts and was reminded that you use Mandrake. All my advice was based on Fedora experience. I stopped using Mandrake because of problems installing new software similar to those you've experienced. I was pretty much limited to install those packages that Mandrake provided, and that was too few.
Anyways, good to hear that your problem is solved.

I'm still having sound card issues and other issues. God I hate mandrake. Guess it's time to switch to another distro. Dammit, now I have to look up out how to not fuck up my dual boot and remove Mandrake safely.

Heh, funny madrake is still on glib 2.2, on gentoo i currenty have glib-2.6.5 installed.

Anyway, if you use one package handler I would recomend you to continue use that one for all packages (unless you compile and install locally)

I used mandrake onece and i only had problems, too similar to those in windows imo. I donno if your problem is madrake specific but it seems like it, it's a common sound card!

What I mostly use my computer for: Internet, Music (listening and not production or anything like that), and, homework (I'm a Computer Science major).

if you're a newB go with Mandrake or SuSe, something simple to start with, don't start with a very bare bones distro, or else you'll get frustrated quickly

EDIT: it's also been a few years since I've used Mandrake, and I've always used Soundblasters, if you have probs with mandrake try suse personal.

That's actually what I decided to do after doing further research into distros (using suse). Debian is nice (the distro the have at the labs on campus) but annoying to install.
