I had it done when I lived in Washington DC for $3000 for both eyes. I was near sighted not too bad- maybe 20/60 in one eye, a little worse in the other. Basically I went in for a consult. They make you look down the road in the machine, they blow stead into your eyes and some other weird stuff. This is basically to confirm your eye generates enough moisture for recover by generating a profile of how wet your eye is across the surface. Then, they show you this profile and tell you whether or not you are a good candidate. Then, I went in two weeks later and had it done. Basically, they give you 2 big vicadins upon arrival, they lay you down, clamp your one eye open, cut the film around your pupil with a circular blade, shoot the laser for about 5 seconds, then place the film back onto the cornea of the eye. About one minute per eye. I should mention they give you numbing drops first before cutting the film so you don't really feel anything but there is some slight discomfort knowing the surface of your eye is being cut. Thats the worst part of it- the laser is fine.
When I left that day, my gf had to drive me home, you sleep for a couple hours after taking 2 more vicadin, then you wake up and go about your business. Back to full normal vision within a couple days, albiet with a little dryness. They give you two types of drops to take.
by the way, I had this done when I was 23 and I'm 26 now and have no problems. I wouldn't pay more than $3000 for both eyes (as I chose the most reputable and coincidentally the most expensive surgeon in the DC/NOVA area). Things to seem to be more expensive here in Canada however...
