i suppose "turntablism" could count as true hip-hop? i can only think of one name at the moment (Q-Bert).

Okay... ummm... 2Pac is 'shitty?' Yikes...

Overall, I say Nas. Nas' first 2 albums are two of the greatest of all time.

As for 'underground' rap (which I guess is what this thread is basically getting at):

Living Legends (which includes):
Eligh
The Grouch
Scarub
Murs
among others...

In-Q is reallll underground and unsigned, but he is great. Probably my favorite right now.
Isosceles is old and defunct. But their album from 98 was so dope.
Cyne. Pretty obscure, but they're damn good.

Quite simply: all of them.

My favorite De La album changes just about monthly/weekly, but right now, I'd have to go with Buhloone Mindstate. Last week it was Stakes.

atmosphere is okay but i cant say im a huge fan. the newest cd (had cd release party here in milw this past tues) is dissapointing. the god loves ugly cd is the only one worth any praise in my opinion and even then i'm being generous. i think he's way too.. 'modern suburbia' to be rapping. he was raised in minneapolis for christs sake. how can you be from minneapolis and be gangster? not one person in the whole 4 million person metro makes less than 40,000 a year except college students and even then they're pushing it. problem is really his beats are uninspired and reptitive. a lot of the beats in his songs are incredibly similar to every other song on every other album and theres moments where he just as such a lack of flow that its almost hard to listen to. too bad my best college friend, whos dorm i chill at all the time is addicted to atmosphere so i have to listen to it against my will a lot.

my opinion of good hip hop includes but is no limited to, common, wu tang, binary star, three 6 mafia, mos def, etc

Most rappers suck, but some have made one or more real good tracks, with a real good message.

Casual Brothers - People (I love this one)
Eminem - Sing for the Moment (yup, eminem is good, and this is one of his best ever.)

What I consider "true" is what have a meaning. as soon as a song includes one of these phrases: "get dough", "Yo!", "a'it" etc I throw the cd away, no question.

And oh my god. You know Kanye West - Diamonds From Sierra Leone? It sucks.

Thing is the song is about the mine in africa right? Were slaves worked ones, and the workers principally still is slaves. That is what it should be about, and that is what the sample is about, and that is what the video is about, and that is was the title is about. Now let me cite:

"It take more than a magazine to kill my Vibe does
Does he write his own rhymes?
Well sort of, I think em
That mean I forgot better shit than u ever thought of "

Need I say more? It's not even rhymes man.

I detest rap... especially the commercial shit kids listen to. Mtv destroys music...

lm not saying that all people that listen to rap/hip-hop are ganstas or wannabes, but come on all rapers have this attitude! Look at them MOST of them arrogant! not my scene at all, l HAVE tried to undertand this genre of music, but it's does not do for me..not talking for everyone! The attitude, the way they speak, the way they dress etc!
