It's so standard because it's how we walk/move in general. You don't walk "one two three...one two three..." you walk "One two one two one two" which is the same as "one two three four".

You can usually tell what is 4/4 if you listen to the emphasis of the beat. If the loud beat goes LOUD soft LOUD soft, then it's 4/4 (well, 2/2, but it's really the same). If it goes LOUD soft soft then its 3/4 time.
