I admire the point you're attempting to prove topicstarter, but theres a big difference between spinning old tech house tracks with black hole trance and spinning brand new hardass techno with black hole trance

There's a big difference bewteen copying and learning! Style is not so much what a DJ does, but more about the music he plays and the fashion he plays it in.... HENCE, the original topic of this thread. Tiesto's style is about the tracks he plays and not the DJ skill he possesses.

Pio, you are confusing me a bit here. As an active trance fan the past 10 years, and a member of several online trance communities these past 6 years or so, I thought the reason why everyone loved Tiesto so much was for two reasons.. 1. His song selection and the emotional feeling to his mixes/music, and 2. His beat mixing skills. I remember back 5 years ago everyone praising him for his mixing skill.

His beatmatching skills were definitely sharper in the classic days (Forbidden Paradise 3 till Magik 6), but only because his approach was a bit more traditional and nowhere nearly as experimental as it got after 2001. But if you listen to the livesets or if you ever saw him live in 2001 or before you would know that technically speaking he wasn't really that much better than how he was in 2002 and beyond.

We did praise his mixing skills back then because they were, in fact, praisable. Yet what made me like him so much more than even Oakie and Armin and Ferry and PvD in 1999 was mainly track placement and the construction of the Magik narrative.

Tiesto was never notorious for amazing beatmatching/fading skills - pre or post 2001. Energy 2000 is a prime example.

And I admire the intelligence behind most of these posts, its turning out to be a decent read, rather than the Sasha whores flaming the Tiesto whores. Ooops. There I start...

quote from a recent post on TA.. doesn't require 2 braincells to work out who wrote it

quote:
Anyone can have an opinion. That's not hard. No one is impressed that you can do that. But to get your opinion noticed, to make it more attractive to others, to make it sound, concrete and unignorable, is to justify the logic and the understanding of your opinion through supporting evidence, empirical research, and keen observation. That's what turns it into a quality meme. That's how your opinion becomes an elite member of human brainfarts. And that's how your opinion can be right.

i think it holds true here; not one of the opposing arguments has held anywhere near as much intellectual weight as mr inventor-of-mcprog's ( ) views... which to a large extent i agree with

i don't really LIKE being a fan of tiesto... since it involves getting lumped in with the mindless blind worshippers that don't know better (which unfortunately makes up >75% of his fanbase), and while he isn't consistant at all these days, i'll still download the odd set and go see him play if the oppurtunity arises. not hanging onto past glory or anything... moreso because there are still 'hits' among his largely hit & miss repetoire, and have enjoyed a few of his sets this year (ISOS4 not being one of them)

i've always found it hard to put my finger on exactly what it was that made his sets appeal to me more than all the other leading trance DJs but pio has summed it up quite nicely here.. kudos

Well the tracklists you can read on the forum here the day after the show so you have no reason for standing next to the dj booth the whole night and can go dancing...

Oh forgot...dj whore
