+1000000000000000

Very well stated.

I have worked in customer service for 6 years, been a waitress only since August, but I have had more than my fair share of assholes to deal with.

Diginut, the customer is not always right. This is a big problem with our society - we use blanket statements like that one to excuse outrageous behaviour that by any means on any level is not right. A customer who gropes my ass is not right. A customer who yells and flips out and swears at me is not right. Half the time, the customer is not right, and people need to start realizing this. We are offering people this excuse to use in their defense for being a prick.

Once I was working at a gas station, sick as a dog with bronchitis and laryngitis, so not only could I not speak, but I was also hacking my guts out. I HAD to go into work, bills needed to be paid, and it was inventory week, my boss "needed me there" or they would be screwed. Anyway, there were two lines, one for everything BUT gas, and the other that could take everything including gas. This was not our decision, the computers were designed this way, and the one computer was simply not equipped to do gas purchases.

There was a large sign above the gas line that said, "this server will take ALL gas purchases". But some guy gets into my line, the one without the gas, and when he comes up and says "20 on pump 7" and I whisper, "you have to pay over there", he flipped out. He yelled and screamed and told me that I was a dumb idiot for not telling him before that he couldn't pay for his gas there, and "now he has to wait all over again". I looked at him and mustered up my strength to try and squeeze some sound out and said "I'm sorry but my till can't take gas". My voice cracked out and was so hoarse you could hardly make out what I was saying, but suddenly the guy looks at me and goes "oh, I'm sorry, I hope you feel better", and he walks to the other line.

WTF?!?!

I think half the time, people just like to take out their pent up aggression on people in customer service because they know they cannot do anything about it. "It's their job" and "the customer is always right", so they take advantage of it while the poor clerk or waitress or whoever it is has to take it.

I had hundreds of people yell at me for gas prices. Fuck you buddy, do you honestly think I have any influence on a national commodity?! I'm a fucking clerk getting paid minimum wage and in highschool!

I completely agree with you and I think that's exactly the right attitude. And when I'm on the customer end of things, I also know enough to stay polite when I have a problem, because being rude only makes it less likely to get solved.

I thought this thread was a bit of an overreaction to a pretty banal issue for waiters/waitresses - if a customer who plows through an order can ruin your day or compel you to take "revenge" on them or their order, you ought to be doing a different job. There's also nothing to indicate that this customer "barked" his/her order... they could have made their order in a perfectly polite tone of voice and just skipped past the standard greeting.

You always have to draw the line somewhere but many people draw it far too soon. People who rise to the levels of upper management are always the ones who know how to handle difficult situations (including difficult customers) with tact, composure, and courtesy. The others tend to drift from one "service" job to another, unable to hold down any of them for more than a few months. Whether they quit or are let go isn't important because it all equates to being an unreliable employee. They drive away customers, they often do their job half-assed because they are "too stressed out", and just having them around is a liability because they might not be around for very long.

I'm not suggesting that you're the latter - as I said, I think you've got the right attitude. Other people here clearly don't, though.

By the way, what you said about cold or late food is true, but consider also that the kitchen staff rarely receive a compliment for preparing a nice meal. You as a service person get all the complaints, but you also get most of the praise - their jobs are completely thankless.
