OK, so Adam and Eve were chucked out of Eden, then they had 2 sons Cain and Abel. How did they manage to spawn off anybody else from that? Unless they had sex with their mother...

hehe ok point taken...these are just things that cross my little mind. As for your question about whether human suffering fits in with a belief in God, believers often explain that away as God's test of our faith/punishment for sin, etc.
You've probably already realised this isn't a debate I can contribute very much to though.

i dono.. i think either their data is fucked up, biased or just incomplete/incorrect
i have met one person in my entire life who believed that, and this is a very regular topic when drunk at parties. my mom is the type of person who takes a lot of the bible literally, but she thinks that claim is stupid. our priests do too. catholic churches are famous for glorifying the stories in the bible as cold stone fact, but even our priests agree that the adam & eve story is simply symbolic and that you can't argue with carbon dating. that God has simply played a role in the evolution of man. the think us evolving from single celled organisms to monkeys to this is stupid, but they do believe in humans being around for millions of years and evolving at least mentally and technologically.

People that don't believe in God would say:
God is for the mindless sheep that don't have a mind of their own
People that believe in God would say:
For those who believe, no explanation is necessary
Over the last few years, my family has come through really trying times, and besides that, I feel like I've gotten a lucky break in life wheN I thought the shit was gonna hit the metaphorical fan way too many times to be pure coincidence. So yeah. Faith is a good thing to have, I'm all for science, and damn if those creationist nuts get into any classroom I participate in, but faith gives people hope, and for me, that's enough.

In recent times, the Catholic Church has actually been more willing to accept and place itself in a separate role to science... Maybe the Vatican learned from all that Gallileo business. I dunno but the vast majority of the literalists seem to come from the Protestants. In fact most of the crazy shit seems to be comening from the Protestant fundamentalists in the US these days (star wars and harry potter are evil, dance music is the devil's work, Asian Martial Arts all involve Satanic rituals etc..). Must have something to do with the historical echoes of Puritanism or some shit.

yeah i've noticed the catholic religion seeming to lighten up a bit. the protestants on the other hand... i don't even know what to say. this thread is dying though and i can't think of anymore good discussion topics so i'm just gonna call it quits and venture into the PDD for the first time in months
