Racism isn't legal anymore in the US, but it's hardly vanished.

I went downtown to volunteer @ the Salvation Army in Austin, and every single one of the faces was Black. Now this is in a city that has a very small Black population and is mostly White and Latino.

I swear I did not even see one White or Latino homeless person there.

Look at the pictures from Katrina if you need any more evidence that institutionalized poverty is still a large problem for the Black community.

Now I'm not saying that things haven't improved a-lot, because they have. It's just that racism is so deeply entrenched in American society that there is still a great deal of descrimination when it comes to employment, housing, interactions with police, etc. - especially for Black Americans.



But think how boring American culture would be without Black people.

A world without Rock music (Chuck Berry), Blues, Jazz, Richard Pryor, Gordon Parks, etc. is not a world I'd like to live in.

Oprah sucks though.

the fact that the concepts of "acting black" and "acting white" exist only adds up to the barriers on the acceptance of all races. so, one could argue that by making threads like this, you are only contributing to the mess. but then again not talking about issues is crap so yeah.
