Trance is most assuredly not shit, nobody would go down to the record store & say "Hey, I got money to burn, let's get some imported shit music!" We love trance because it's emotive, it means something, it gives a black & white world a slap of colour. Trance is not for the masses, it is for those with ears to hear, with eyes to behold, with heart to feel. No genre starts of intellectually, they were all made for the entertainment of certain people, be it classical, rock, etc. But, with the passing of time, it was found that soemthing resided in a piece of music, an artist's soul, his/her blood, sweat & tears scream through every chord in good music & hence it is worthy of analysis. Trance is relatively infant, as is EDM at large, and I'm sure in time to come, people at large will come to realise that there are layers to peel away from trance, to behold, to marvel at. And right now, this destiny is being tarnished by pretenders to the throne, and you say that we're pretending it was better back then? Perhaps you are not part of those with ears to hear. |
There have always been "pretenders to the throne" and there will always be. And don't be fooled. Trance was not better back then, it was 'slighty' and I emphasize slightly different. Doesn't make it better or worse; makes it different. Anways, you've made some good points, but I really don't like bickering - especially on forums. Fact of the matter is: these forums are turning into elitist propaganda and are probably turning away more neutral skeptics from trance, rather than attracting them. Then again, some may think this is a good thing...

Music made for Suzy Creamcheese, its all about the target audience. Most record companaies market their music for 14 year old girls who like to sing along to the radio. Frank Zappa learned of this practice, and named this stereotypical girl "Suzy Creamcheese". Evidently when the 14 year old girl market is locked down the record companies make the most money, there seems to be alot of market research on this.
So you hear a tune, and if you can picture Suzy Creamcheese singing along with it, then there you go, bring on the rot. Alot of trance I think is girl music in much the same way, and alot of the backlash against trance is a shift towards music that is obnoxiously masculine, personally I wish there could be a balance instead of these bipolar stereotypes that our music employs. This balance stuff doesn't seem to be going so well right now though, people seem to be pursuing this style that fuses together genres but its all so unexciting, if you are going to hybridize stuff, then leave the boring parts behind.
I would hope that somebody out there would picture me as their target audience instead of suzy creamcheese or jonny bogbog, but I guess there just aren't enough people like me for that to be a good business move. Maybe this is why I am enjoying internet music, I imagine computer geeks are more the targe audience there.
