I don't think you can call it be genre. Saying "trance" will go from the most uninspired, preset dominated generic anthemer all the way up to one of BT's excessively tweaked, synth-opera studio masterpieces, with everything in between.

I'd say loop based music that uses samples heavily. Hip-hop or funky house for example. You are using repetition, you're using little more than a beat, sample and bassline and you didn't even have to write the main chunk of it.

The hardest for me would probably be something like Orbital's cohesive albums. The Middle of Nowhere plays like one glorious hour long track, but the most multi-layered, innovative and rich track you can imagine. The production is outstanding, the music unique and the arrangements are often very complex. Big, leftfield journey albums like that.

That is true, however I don't think it's really fair to compare loop based music to producing "real" (I couldn't think of a better word) tracks since in those genres the music is only a backbone (to rapping, for example) and not an actual track as such.

You can get pretty creative with sampling too but that's a whole different topic altogether...
