You are right buddy...A VW is a VW through and through. Yes they are fun cars, but they have to rebrand that car in order for it to be taken seriously. |
Not necessarily... those figures are those figures... I'd buy a YUGO if it put up figures like that.... add to that the fact that its semi-affordable (not like the $1-million dollar supercars).... and i think that it will sell-out of its limited-production run...
| quote: | I am still a bit sore with VW since they keep building their cars more and more mainstream. The GTI as mentioned in another post is becoming more and more 'old man friendly' not what GTis have always stood for. And also, IMO they are becoming very very expensive given it is a 2 door Golf. Its an overweight hatchback...don't get me wrong I am liking the newer GTIs as a car...the price is extreme for what is being bought, I think. I as a consumer of a GTI would rather have VW cut the cost a bit and take out some of the BS options. Its 2 doors...I dont like power windows and door locks. Save that and give me a better designed exhaust system, a slightly more powerful rev happy engine, a more firm ride...something that will make me think I am driving a no-nonsense sporty car. My 2 cents.

This is the third post i've seen of you bitching about our cars, man. Dude, wake up!! If VW continue making the MkII GTI with no power windows, etc... they WOULD NEVER SELL ANY. All the competitors continue to update their engines, interiors, etc... and VW has to keep up (and hopefully) stay ahead of the game. Tell me a competitor that builds a sporty hatch with no power windows/locks/ etc? AND sells well? there isn't one... Its not just what one or two consumers out there want, its about whats going to make money. There are a LOT of cars i wished came in 5-speed but DON'T (see: Accord V6)..... but they apparently wouldn't be economically viable, thats why they aren't built.
I have a 2000 GTI VR6, and its my 3rd GTI... it is in NO way any less fun than my mark II or mark III.... It is just as fun, just a lot nicer...... how is this car overpriced (as you like to say)????? it sold for $22,500 brand new, it has automatic climate control (like mercedes and BMW's), it has a 28-position one-touch sunroof (BETTER than mercedes & BMW), 3 Auto-dimming mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, full leather interior & burlwood dash, fast VR6 engine, 6 airbags (driver, passenger, 2 side, 2 curtain), one-touch up/down windows WITH pinch-protection, a 300-watt Monsoon sound-system w/changer, and is great for long trips. The car competes with cars that cost a LOT more than it... its not "just a hatchback".... Its a hatchback with as many amenities as a 330Ci or C-class... but costs around 15,000 less. So where is the "overpriced" part? Some people think its overpriced b/c "its a VW".... well these people need to wake up... it's not 1988 anymore. The Corrado sold for more than my car did. And that was back in 1993. People need to stop complaining about prices based on marquee and start looking at substance. The same people complained the new Tiburon was severly overpriced.... they said "its just a Hyundai".... i said "screw you, its a sports car that LOOKS like a 550 maranello and has a high-output V6 with 6-speed manual tranny and 10-year warranty"..... i don't care who makes it.
Anyway, the new GTI is not built for the same purposes as the original MkI GTI, b/c that was during a time of the oil crisis... Light, economy-driven cars were the key back then. Now, most consumers want luxuries in the cars... If people (for some reason) prefer having a stripped-down car, they buy a USED one.
I can assure you as a former car salesman, i NEVER had someone ask me for a VW without power windows or power locks. I never heard someone complain that their GLX jetta came with climate control, one-touch sunroof, one-touch windows, full-size spare, etc....
VW is not meant as an economy-car manufacturer, they've clearly stated this many times in press conferences. They are entry-level luxury.... and the GTI is just as sporty as ever (in fact the newest GTI has better skidpad and higher slalom speed figures than the last 3 had....) so how is the new GTI "not as good" as the last 3? And like i said, i've had a gen II, gen III, and now the gen IV..... this gen IV was just as much fun as the gen II, only it is WAYYY more luxurious.... better for long trips.
I also can't understand why you don't like the fact that the TT has and engine that is "also in the Golfs/Jettas".... man what kind of elitist BS is that? FYI VW owns Audi, VW's designers penned the TT, VW engineers designed & built the 1.8T engine. Why does it have Audi-emblems stamped on the block? B/c VW had to release it under the Audi-name first so it would get proper respect from people like you, that like to discredit something JUST b/c of its' marquee....
Apologies to everyone else for the ranting, just had to tell this to mister "i hate VW's"
