The problem seperate accounts brings is that it inevitably leads to a financial dispairity between the partners. As we all know money is power therefore it follows that a difference in the financial footing of the partners creates a power inbalance. Now this can be great if you happen to be the one with more power, however, if one has more power then their partner the "equal" partnership simply doesn't exist. No one should ever have the upper hand in a marriage.... there should be no hands.

i agree with you. i also think it is just easier to have shared accounts. right now, between me and my husband, we have like 6 accounts (we have so many b/c of 2 different countries). it is kind of confusing, and the shared account is a lot easier. i think it is a personal preference, but if you can make it work between 2 different accounts, then fine, but it confuses me.

Right now we have a joint account with one checking and one savings. Once I'm done with immigration and can get a job up here, I plan to open another checking account, and then from there we plan to pool a savings account as a certain percentage of our wages.

Wouldn't now, but plan to at some point.

EDIT: Besides, that's not really what I meant. Even if it's gonna save me $50,000 (or $500,000, or $50,000,000), I don't want money to play into any decision as to whether or not to stay with someone. If it's not working, I don't want to think, "well, I really don't love her at all any more, but it's gonna cost me $100,000...I guess I can stick it out for a while."

keep everything separate.
weigh the pros and cons btwn separate or joint accounts and you'll see.
think in terms of if u split, and if you don't think in those terms, that's just being in denial and dumb.

Isn't it kind of stupid to plan for divorce? If you think you're going to get divorced, why get married at all?

You're already setting the marriage up for failure by assuming that it wont work out.

No wonder the divorce rate is through the roof.

having a separate account isnt going to really help out in a divorce. if you own a house and other assets then you have to split that too. then you have to pay lawyers and other fees. a bank account wont matter in the long run really.
