So, like, when I drive my car, people LIVES ARE IN MY HANDS. Anytime I wanted to, I could drive up on the sidewalk and kill a few people, or if I am impaired by drugs or alcohol, my actions may not be intentional and I could end up killing pedestrians or hitting another car. This is why I would not drive while impaired by drugs or alcohol. So is the possibility that I might have to drive a car someday something that should keep me from doing drugs or getting drunk ever?

First of all, you can't even compare the responsibility of being a driver to the responsibility of being a doctor.

Also, I'm not talking about the use of alcohol and drugs in moderation, I'm talking about consistent abuse of them.

Nice try though.

Actually that's not true, I did mushrooms in October when Burridge was here. My bad.

Otherwise, no drugs for me! I don't even smoke weed anymore.

Wasn't comparing them directly. But responsibility is a really fragile thing sometimes - I only used driving as an example because it is another activity (one that most people can relate to) where it is quite easy for somebody to lose their life if the person behind the wheel is not completely in control of their actions and thoughts. I felt that, in this respect, it was quite similar to being a healthcare professional.

Ahh, then it is obvious that we were on seperate pages. Perhaps I misunderstood you as you seemed to be coming off pretty convicted that any drug use or otherwise social deviation impairs a doctors ability to do his or her job whatsoever, which I thought to be fairly untrue. But it also seems to me that, in some cases, somebody having a drug or alcohol "problem" fits into a grey area - as in, what seems to be a "problem" to some people is not always a "problem" as far as others see it. However, if your definition of a problem was doctors getting coked the hell out every weekend (and even during the week sometimes?) and showing up to work not completely capable of putting their all into focusing on their job, then yeah, that is fairly black and white, and I agree with you that people in the healthcare field should be held to a higher standard of showing up to work completely sober.

either way, you used to, and now all of a sudden you are turning your nose at people who do it? i mean, it's one thing to just be like, "man, i'm glad i dont do that shit any more", but to point your finger at them is kind of obnoxious. i started to do that for a while in my sober days, but the more i thought about it, i was like, "who the hell am i to talk?" now i'm just like whatever, it's their business.

and especially because you are babbling about being "HUMAN" in the first place, right? is that this thread or another one? and now you seem to be completely changing your tone and having no patience or mercy for people who can do drugs on the weekends, and save lives during the week.

I guess the case for DR too...do steroids affect your workplace efficacy at all? There's been a lot of debate lately about them and there's not a lot of evidence to suggest that they cause anything like 'roid rage' often portrayed in the media, or even any real physiological damage (though testosterones are neurotoxic if you take enough of them). A whole great number of America's police force is on steroids, and those people carry a gun around all day...

Your interpretation of my posts is completely wrong. I'm not talking about "regular" people, I'm talking about health care professionals.

Looks like you have a problem with reading comprehension too.

Perfectionism is a flaw in many cases (and lends itself to many remarkable egocentricities).

Well duh. Nobody's claiming perfectionism here. Sorry if I come across that way.

I guess I'm not conveying my thoughts in a manner that is clear to everyone (something I struggle with ). I'm talking very specifically about medical professionals who abuse drugs and alcohol, and continue to practice within their field. I think it's unethical, and I don't think there's ANY excuse for it. Plain and simple.
