My ex gf used to always say that her doctor said it was impossible to "catch up" on lost sleep. So if you had a really rough work week and got only 5 hours sleep from Sunday to Thursday, then have a great 12 hour session on Friday night, you're not helping your body in the long run. That's why they emphasise regular, 7-8 hour sleep shifts every night. I don't quite see it that way though, partly because I never feel "refreshed" unless I've had at least 9 hour sleep or a coffee or two. If i've been busy and stressed out in a week and I konk out for a good 11-12 hours when the weekend comes, I feel absolutely magnificent upon waking on Saturday.

Somebody told me that sleeping "too much" after a big party (drugs and whatnot) actually makes your come down/hang over worse in the next few days.

I read somewhere recently that sleep deprivation is not cumulative and your body adjusts back to normal without making up every single lost minute.
Thank god.

Regarding sleeping after extreme sleep dep, ie entire night(s) missed of sleep, I let my body do what it wants to do. I've already been fucking with it, I really owe it to myself to let myself and my brain sleep as long as is needed.

exactly and hence I try to get the 7-8 hours of sleep esp. before tests/exams

I go to bed around 11-midnight...

But when a project/assignment needs to be done...I'll try to stay up as late as possible (5 a.m. the latest to date).

I switch from night shifts to day shifts every 2 months and that tends to make it hard to have a "normal" sleeping pattern. But I agree with you here, when going from one shift to the other I tend to sleep upwards of 16-20 hours and afterwards feel completely refreshed and get accustomed to my new sleeping hours without any problems.

Heehee, I think all the partying back in college had alot to do with my odd sleeping patterns

if i have to get up the next morning... i try to be in bed by midnight.
If ive got nothing to do like right now... 2-4am

I do miss the days of barely able to stay up till 10pm. I had such good sleeps then.

ive been on a 10-12 hr a night sleeping binge lately though
not having to be at work or school is nice sometimes.

it is true, you are not catching up on loss of sleep at all. Your body even though it needs the sleep will be overslept causing you to feel just as bad. We are all guilty of it though, sleeping long hours after partying, but it doesn't help. You are best to just get your regular hours of sleep and be on your way. But try waking someone up who has partied all night long after only 7 or 8 hours sleep. THAT is impossible

(I am only awake now cuz I have been sleeping since 7pm tonight )

I feel like shit after partying no matter what, on 5 hours sleep or 15. I find I am much moodier and snappy if I sleep for a long time after a big night. But I meant more just being naturally tired from not sleeping well over a few days because of work/school/stress, etc. Sometimes, like right now during the Month of Essays, when the weekend comes I just want to hit the pillow early on Friday. I hardly ever party on Fridays because I go to bed at 1am and wake up at noon EVERY Saturday, feeling great and ready to party. That's why I always disputed what my ex gf said. I always feel great after a good 10, even 12, hour sleep marathon. It's when I konk out for 16+ hours after being up for 36 partying, studying, writing, whatever.

It's 5am right now, I'm stoned and won't be up for much longer so there you go.
