Thanks. Like I didn't already know this. These are all excuses for avoiding something than can become an Issue for our future generations. Have all the money you want, but if 1/10 of the world becomes inhumane to live in, what's going to happen?

edit: This is why it has to become a GLOBAL problem. Yes we need to do our own individual changes BUT there has to be international laws that prevent countries such as China and even North America from polluting so damn much.

well unfortunately a lot of them have problems seeing the scientific facts and understanding the scope of possible danger... and future generations are def not in their top list of priorities

Exactly. They'd rather live well while they are alive and fuck the world over for us rather than have to "suffer" some changes.

I agree and it's sad that a minority have this mindset about the environment...

I guess we'll have to learn things the hard way

there needs to be massive collective action in order to change the way they see this... I mean even Greenpeace sometimes cannot get changes through

the only thing i'm not particularly in favour of, is this polluting rights trading... i really think instead of that, there should be a more strict, lower quota of amount of pollution permited (if any at all!)... why don't governments subsidize pollution control devices? (i'm not 100% sure about that, but governments don't, right?)

To play a bit of devil's advocate, most nations run on a deficit budget and still have debts to pay off.

Long term planning becomes less important when short term difficulties and problems seem more pressing. *shrug*

I do not believe that Kyoto is the answer. A one-size-fits-all strategy for all countries to reduce thier polution is not realistic. That is one of the big problems I have with the Liberal party right now.

Subsidizing pollution control devices is a complicated issue. Take the oil industry for example. This industry has high potential for polution, but it's not exactly a good thing for governments to be subsidizing booming industries.

You guys are right that this is an international issue, but I think we as a nation need to worry more about what we are doing about how much polution we cause, considering we are one of the worst nations in the developed world.

I'm gonna have to agree with you Graham. I never really liked Kyoto. Yes it is a step in the right direction but it's not the proper solution. A start would be to stop selling/using coal here on the west coast or at least changing over to the new plasma coal plants that produce very small amounts of emissions. Hopefully Hybrid cars will become even cheaper and also another option as Brazil did, is changing over to ethanol as fuel. There are SO many things we can be doing that we aren't. Some people don't like Harper's withdrawl from the Kyoto, but I think he made the right choice. If he is smart, he can do alot better things with that 5 billion. Lets just hope he does.

id definatley agree with you but its a step in the right direction.
an international effort is the only way anything is going to happen obviously

but personally, i think future generations and quite possibly our old age years are fucked regardless.

EXACTLY. Global warming is not a proven phenomenon!

One doesn't have to think it has NO EFECT.

But I believe the effect of it is incredibly exaggerated and a natural warming phenomenon/cycle of the Earth is the primary reason for these warming temps on average.

Im sure polluting effects the earth, but not on the scale many want or seem to believe. Polluting is bad regardless and cutting down is a good thing and should be aggressively pursued.

why not do something about it now, before it gets out of control? We have the technology to do so, so we can only hope that change will come sooner rather than later.
