Yeah, ok, tis true he did that, but it wasn't really related to the Iran-Iraq War. Reagan and Thatcher did a great deal of supporting Saddam in the 80's for the war against Iran, so it would be pretty hypocritical for the West to try him for anything in that war. That whole war was about getting back at the Islamic regime in Iran for the American hostage-taking in '79. Unfortunately the animosities it created linger in the form of the current incursions.
But anyway, yeah, he gassed communities of Kurds and Shi'a that were calling for their independence from Iraq. And for that he deserved to be punished. But in a fair and democratic process, not a sham trial and a (now) public hanging.
And if you look at his actual conviction, it was for one or two incidents in the early 80's. Though to be fair, there's a ton more he was never given a conviction for.
