Micro$oft is going to lose the top spot on market share by fall of '07. It may not be Sony in the drivers seat this time, but I think the 360 is going to be banished to the back seat during this console cycle.

What kind of fantasy world do you live in which an infinite market exists? And when did I claim MS would stay on top? Have you seen the thread on the PS3 "grey market"?

No.

Also, look at it this way. When was the last time you heard the Gamecube mentioned? How about the original Xbox? The answer is...never. They are both DEAD. With the small exception of Zelda on Gamecube (which should hardly count since the game is pretty much now meant to be considered a Wii title), there is absoluetely nothing worth mentioning on either of those 2 consoles. But the PS2? The oldest console of those 3? Its still alive and kicking. And kicking so hard its actually dominating the xbox 360. I think a big reason the 360 has been received so well is because all the same people who bought Xbox's bought 360's, since MS made it public that they were abondoning their first console ever back in 2005.

Define "dominating the 360."

And beyond God of War 2, please fill me in on just what constitutes "alive & kicking." If you really think Sony (and more importantly, any noteworthy developers) are going to support this machine through the next 6 months, IMO, you're crazy.

Sorry champ, again this is a logical fallacy. The new generation is here - The old is gone. There isn't "another year or two" in the PS2's life cycle - No matter what the media tells you.

I look forward to reading them. Hopefully "dominating the 360" will be defined somewhere in your documentation.

I don't get it, your post on one hand makes a very logical analogy that the 360 and wii are both on their way to becoming sucessful systems, then you claim the 360 is going to banished completely as a high selling system

That cannot be. the 360 has sold very well. extremely well considering its a microsoft system, and deservingly so, its a great system. the wii is a also a very interesting system and all the kudos to it doing well, nintendo really needed this. and, while the ps3 is a hot item, i highly doubt thats its just going to walk and trounce over everyone and make a killing in the sales department just so quickly. time will tell exactly what is the fate of each of these systems. just check out the recent sales history, they're proof.

Maybe 'dominating' is overexaggerating, however I did read that the PS2 was outselling the 360 throughout much of 2006.

I'm not gonna dig up 2 month old sales numbers, because that would misrepresent any argument I would be trying to make. I'm still trying to find current NPD sales pertaining to the holidays. Proving that the PS2 dominated hardware sales in October doesnt mean jackshit now, considering Gears of War was released in that time.

As I surf some of the major gaming websites, many of them are declaring the 360 the winner of this past holiday season. The problem is, those same sites are really only declaring the 360 a winner over the Wii and PS3. I havent found any actual real numbers yet, nor have I found any regarding PS2 sales.

Well, I wasnt talking from a developer standpoint, but a sales standpoint. Reading IGN's very own "2006 In Review" article, the section about PS2 clearly states:

2006 marked the sixth year of the PS2 out on the market, and while a large amount of its thunder was stolen with the impending launch of its successor, the PS3, it still held its own. More than 110 million PS2s had been sold by the end of the year, with no signs of sales significantly dropping off . In fact, some regions found an increase in the number of purchased consoles: at one point, European and PAL territories were selling more than one hundred thousand systems a week.

http://ps2.ign.com/articles/749/749553p1.html

If you speak from a developer's standpoint, you are definetely right. Although it would be stupid for a company to now completely ignore the PS2 even though its continuing to sell like crazy, its likely that the big names companies are going to concentrate a lot more on the next-gen consoles.

Here's something Ive never understood. What REALLY decides when we truly enter the next generation; when the companies release new consoles or when the old consoles stop selling? I always thought it was the latter.

I doubt the PS3 will be as successful as the PS2, but I honestly think its downright impossible for the PS3 to be a complete failure considering how much Sony is banking on it and considering the overwhelming 3rd party support and movie studio support towards blu-ray.

Lemme get back to you. Were talking in the now, so I want numbers from the now. I'm still not finding them. If anyone else cares to contribute on a hardware sales figure for all the consoles as of Dec. 2006, it would be great.

I think that maybe he meant to say that the demand for the 360 will wean off, rather rapidly as time goes on.

I'm inclined to agree. IMO, the ps3 was off to a rough start and deservedly so. What the hell is out on that system that actually warrants owning one now? Not much. However there will be more. Sony has had a strong history of exclusivity with certain big name products, and I don't see that changing, no matter how much $$$ Microsoft throws out.

One point I'd like to know what you guys think about is the abysmal performance of the 360 in Japan. Historically, game systems that do well there tend to get the most 3rd party support. I was just wondering if any of you see this as being an inevitable downfall of the 360?

1. See the list of Sony "exclusive titles" at this point

2. To be fair, the PS3 had a worse launch in Japan than the 360 did (if you compare the 360's sale numbers Holiday 05 w/ PS3's from 06; Article at IGN )**

**Though, PS3 is doing better in Japan currently than the 360.

it could be a downfall for the 360 but only in the Japanese markets. the 360 has a very loyal fan base in north America and Europe. its only the licensing of, or lack of licensed games, that hurt the 360 in japan. now its very unlikely that because the 360 doing poor in japan that it will lose its fan base or affect its market share. in my opinion, the 360 has proven to be a better system than the original xbox.

agreed and why is no one bringin up the Xbox Live Marketplace. I think that's one of the major reasons why 360 is building up a loyal fan base, and it'll only improve, pushing Microsoft to the top in a couple years.

That's pretty much the answer I would have given right there. 360 is going to bomb in Japan exactly like the original Xbox did. Sales in the US and Europe are going to level off sooner or later, then pehaps a spike for a few months when Halo 3 hits. When people finally see what the PS3 has to offer by the end of this year, the PS3 sales are going to start to tail 360 sales quite closely I think.
