Yes, he is. But that night was the worst. I was in the booth for about 15 seconds and had to leave because it was so freaking loud. I had that sharp pain you get in your ear when something is just way to loud. I couldn't believe he couldn't hear the monitors.

Matt said he also complained about there being a delay in the monitors. How could he tell???? He couldn't hear it anyway!

I think in-club acoustics play a terribly important role as well but most club owners dont think about it as much and everyone just goes for the "louder = better" approach.

I think after my first experience with hearing damage (too many hours spent one day working on a track with headphones... how crazy is that?) I baby my ears like nothing else... Its crazy because, I know my hearing is probably much better than most peoples but i still hate to lose it!

haha okok... i mean... i can hear the high pitched whine when people turn on a TV in other parts of a house even when the sound is off, or just little sounds that nobody else hears - I've got a great story about my mom buying this little "silent" spider repeller for the attic, she switched it on while i was in the living room... and all i could hear was this HORRIBLE noise screeching out from the other room! So of course i started shouting to her to turn it off... everyone in my family looked dumbfounded when i kept asking them "cant you hear that!?"

hehe come on, someone here has to have the same problem that i do... right? I think thats what makes me extra nervous in the clubs... i realize i can hear lots more with music and dont want to lose that ability

I keep toying with the idea of getting the super nice attenuators but ive heard loads of stories about them being fairly uncomfortable, so i havent bothered. Now for dj's... you do really need the full frequency response that they offer instead of just dulling the sound.

I hear the same on occasion, it's really annoying. Sitting in the dead quiet and hear an annoying ringing. Or like you said turn on the TV and hearing high pitched ringing. I sometimes get a flutter sound in my right ear. It's called Tinnitus and can be caused by a number of factors, but is mainly caused by earwax build up or can be caused by damage to the tiny hairs that line your ear.

Those are sold by a guy here in Dallas, Jason Vasilas, he's a very good DJ himself (he's who opened for Sander Klienenberg and blew him out of the booth), but has Tinnitus. Everyone I know who has these swears by them. They filter the sound down up to 25 db's, yet you can still hear a full range of frequency.

Problem with club sound systems is no one really takes the time to design them right. They just take two stacks of massive speakers, add some subs, and then max out the power and think they have a good system. There is a phrase I was taught when desigining the system for The Tunnel, it's "More is better". But it's not more in the way you think. It's more speakers, less power needed. I.E. place more speakers throughout the club and you won't need to blast the system to get the same sound as an overpowered, poorly designed system.

There is a flip side to that though.....DJ's. Most DJ's work faders like a hooker in Las Vegas, and even if your system is designed right, at some point they are going to be maxing everything out.

Ok you are onto something here. . . To further expand on this idea of having a sound system with more speakers check into Ambisonics. This technology does just what you said about having multiple speakers arrays with seemingly endless 360 degree sound. I'd like to see clubs designed this way with the sound system, but at last the technology is not well known.

At the same time producers out there who use ambisonics will have the ability to use super stereo if and only if the club has a ambisonic surround sound system :P . . . at any rate I have an ideal plan on how to build a studio incorporating this technology.

P.S. Ambisonics can be conceptually difficult for people to grasp (as opposed to conventional "one channel=one speaker" surround, which is easier).
