I have issues with the whole "progressive" moniker when it comes to psychedelic trance. Progressive as a term has been really bastardized and is used whenever somebody can't truly categorize what they listening to. It's a term that inclines that the music is forward-thinking and something different. When in reality anything "progressive" often uses time-tested formulas that are neither different or forward-thinking.
The term "progressive" is term created by A&R people to do one thing. Sell records. The marketing gurus of the acid rock era needed a way to sell the music they were trying to push. The music was a little less "acidic" and a bit more mellow. The musicians would calm thier sound down as a means to sell move records. Hence the genre "progressive rock" came about.
Psytrance in itself is a very diverse genre. The problem I have with "progressive" psy is that it really sounds more like old school deep trance. That's not to say that it doesn't sound good. Artists like Vibrasphere, Antix, Ticon, or 12 Moons create great music. But the psytrance world already has a "label" for that style of music. It's called "morning psy". Psytrance that is most suited for early morning sets. On the other side of the fence, it can be called deep psy (or even *shudders* progressive house).
Now, keep in mind I'm not discrediting the validity of the music. It is good music. I just don't like that people keep trying to push the whole "progressive" name on it because it truly downplays the psychedelic nature of the music itself.
Now if you would excuse me as I step into my anti-flame suit....
