An interesting random fact, I'm also a descendant of Prophet Muhammad, via Imam Zain-ul-Abadin. And I'm from both Shia'a and Sunni heritage.

There is no strong-arm, "we will remove your memberstate status" rhetoric coming from the UN aimed at Iran, but threatening rhetoric has been aimed at Israel. You jump at me with claims of moral high ground like you think I'm a Zionist before you even understand my position. Did i say that it would be a wonderful idea if Israel attacked Iran? Did I suggest the U.S. should use Israel as a proxy to strike Iran? No, because i don't agree with those claims.

Israel has made threats to bomb Iran's nuclear capabilities, and they've made strikes of this nature in the past, so it is a possibility that we will see a repeat. I read this thread quickly and didn't notice a mention of Osirak or Iranian air defense around nuclear sites, but if someone already said it and I'm "rehashing" i sincerely apologize. I thought it pertinent seeing as how the US has weapon trading treaties and promises with Israel, and if we uphold these agreements after Israel instigates violence, we're looking at a very, erm, spicy situation.

If you'd really like a case for attacking, one could be made based upon the enrichment of uranium despite specific promises not to do so. Doesn't hold much water with me as a case for war, but warrant for a strike under the current administration? I don't think it's much of a logical stretch.

Oh, and one more thing: impractical? The US is already in Afghanistan and Iraq. I learned how to play connect the dots when i was six years old No, seriously though you're right. While Iran is still in talks with Russia, why wouldn't we let that option be exhausted before escalating? (That's a rhetorical question, i know "Bush is retarded" has already been suggested)

Well i'll readily admit i misunderstood your position. I thought your arguments were being apologetic. I'm sorry . In light of this new understanding i admit i have nothing to object.

The US has barely enough soldiers to keep Iraq from completely exploding and they're going to start on a new front now? After the Dems took power? After the support for the war is at an all-time low?

Iran is backing off the diplomats issue. their statements were basically "The US wants war but we are staying calm" translation: "The US took some of diplomats so we have to say something but we're not gonna declare war because our nuke isn't ready yet"

...whats that smell?

US Defence Secretary Robert Gates says the United States has "pretty good evidence" linking Iran to powerful roadside bombs used against US troops in Iraq.

Not really worthy of post on its own, because I can use the search to find an existing topic to put it in.
But this has a funny and familiar smell to it from something else.
The wonderful mix of factual and maybe's communication bypass fragrances being mingled together in political doublespeak.

We've smelled something like this before...

I don't think war is inevitable.

Being an older TA, I've lived through the American hostage crisis, and we did not go into a full scale war then, and I don't believe we will now. A large scale conflict is really not in the best interest of the US government, it causes the people to ask questions and form strong opinions, rather than continuing to mindlessly pay their taxes and go about daily trivials.

War with Iran would take the American demographic of 18-25 year olds, the biggest spending group, out of the economy. Not a good idea.

However, if war does happen I hope that it is savage, brutal, merciless, inhumane and over QUICKLY.

US hasn't done that in quite some time, they sort of tried it with Vietnam in a way but where more or less hampered by trying to do two things- obeying conventions of war their enemy didnt care about and secondly by having to be a policeman at the same time.
The other lesson they didnt really learn then is that you cannot do something without international support, hence we have Iraq in its current state of stupidity being out of control. Most of the killing happening there is one local on another, just like it was in Vietnam and the US running around partitioning off regions.
Wouldnt suprise me at all if a couple of things happen.
They don't get the funding to send over more troops and even if they do, its no real assurance (and no disrespect intended to the ones there) that it will stop.
If they do stop, it will only be a quiet lull in the fighting until the yanks go home, then it'll explode again with the muslims killing one another over who's prophet has a tail or doesnt, or whatever its over.
Then, theyre going to have to go back. They'll realise its futile in short order and probably partitian the country with Sunni's in one area and Shiites in another, line in the sand.

After that, it turns into just like every other partitioned bit of land where two people who don't like each other end up turning the place into a cesspit of hostility, North/South Korea, Vietnam before it was unified, Palestine/Israel and India/Pakistan... etc etc.

Current US army and I doubt very many others make very good policemen, they're there to drop bombs, kill everything living and leave nothing unbroken in their path. They do that well, if they where allowed and they arent allowed to do that.
There is also a great deal of current insensitivity from the US when it decides to do a police action rather than wage a proper war, which is perfectly illustrated by the fact that they where neither wanted by the population or bothered to get to know what they where dealing with in terms of the culture.
If they did, maybe they just didnt care.

Wow, what a piece of shit thread this is...

Where's the Bush wants war so he can remain in absolute power and have a police state forever opinion?
