They meant well and I really doubt they could foresee that many centuries into the future where their descendants would squander the ideals they fought for. Sure, it wasn't perfect but 20-20 hindsight tends to be easier rather than coming up with something on the spot like they had to and you've got to admit, they did have some lasting value and contribution which was improved upon and maintained for the most part of the US's existence.
Besides, it's just like old money. It rarely lasts more than a few generations before the corpulent, lazy and ignorant waste it because they are very far removed from the principles of which it was earned in the first place.
If you never had to work, you have no idea of money, if you never had to fight for your freedom, you'll never understand what it is until its gone.
The latter I feel is particularly pertinent to a lot of the US's problems right now, for the majority they're quite happy to be muzzle down in the trough filling their bellies to ever bother about tomorrow.
Live for the moment and that little bit of history in the grand scheme of things, instant gratification now and no concern for the mess they leave behind to the generations that follow.
It's a common human flaw, one that isn't endemic to the USA.
