They've changed a lot. Try FCE ultra with a proper gamepad, I really think you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference, other than not having to blow on the cartridge and whack it on the floor 47 times before it will work.
Even SNES emulation is near-perfect these days with ZSNES. Playstation or N64, not so much...

3-4 years ago I got my X-Box modded and added an 80 gig hard drive so my friend could load it up with all the old games: virtually every NES, SNES, Sega and Atari games plus a bunch more systems, not to mention the countless game hacks (Super KKK Bros. anyone?).
It works flawlessly 99.9% of the time, better than NES games ever worked.. It was the one and only reason I picked up the X-Box.. the last system I ever bought (last one before X-Box was N64)
