if you want to engage in reductionism, there's no call to stop at reducing attention-seeking to approval-seeking - pull it all the way through and you get to pleasure-seeking, which sounds far better.

i'm doubtless hermits are just as shamelessly egoistical as the rest of us, perheps even more so when you consider how rarely society imposes shame on them.

those who do not directly seek approval in the ways you mention seek their approval via different means, and thus are not in any inherently superior position to effectively bestow their judgement upon me, or upon anyone for that matter.
