i see your point on welfare...but im not sure its IMPOSSIBLE in the US. |
hhmm... legalising drugs in America?
I don't know about the US, so I'll stick with my beloved country (Brazil), although I think the following examples can be applied to the US as well.
If the government legalised drug here, the crime rate would drop, however, when one gets addicted, (s)he would do anything to get what he want (i.e. stealing or killing for money). What to do about it? (I hope I'm wrong though)
Also, if drugs were legalised in our countries, we would have problems with our neighbours (as Germany and Belgium often complain about Netherlands) , specially in the US or Brazil, because we live in huge nations, and the production could be massive. (Once again, I hope I'm wrong).
Finally, I don't think American (nor Brazilian) society is ready for such thing, that's all about culture: American society is too "puritan" and we're far too narrow-minded. Actually, I used to have a lot of prejudice against people who use drugs because of my education and the society I live in, but then I grew up and realised that it didn't make sense. And that's something hard to change (specially because this year the TV broadcasted a very long campaign against drugs using soap operas to show that "they're evil"... it may not work for us, but I sure works with most people).
just my two pills
