ok, now that was a bit confusing.
Didnt know Lira was your second name.
anyway, the way you pronounced it wouldnt match either of what me or omega has shown before. the closest i can come to pronouncing it that wa would be:

the top one would be if you say Lira-h, and the second one is Li-ra

Skimming over the phonetic transcriptions of the Sanskrit alphabet, it looks like the second one is close to how I perceive my name... however I'm intrigued about that little U-shaped turn above the "r" - what impact does it have on the pronunciation?

I'm trying to understand how all these diacritics work

well, in this case, if you didnt have the 'u' shaped thing over the 'r', it would be pronounced lir

the u' shaped thing adds the 'a' sound to the 'r' making it lir-a (pronounced in the exact same way as lir-uh but without saying the 'h')

sorry if im confusing you,but thats foreign dialects for you!

No, no, it's not confusing - I do know that writing system often have to resort to different solutions when dealing with foreign languages, and I wanted to know how Sanskrit handled this.

This is all really fascinating to me

Here's me saying my name:

The actual pronunciations seem to be quite different. Phonetically, does Lira sound more like 'Lirah' or does it have a slight hint of "e" like 'Lireh' ? Markus seemed to sound like Mahks or was that closer to Marx ? Do you pronounce the "r" effect while saying Markus ? How would you best write your names in English based on actual pronunciations ? That will change the way your name is written in Sanskrit.

Matra is the straight line and the curve on top. It adds the "e" effect to the letter. The fact that it's drawn on the left or right side of a letter identifies whether the "e" sound is short or long. So in the above pic, the basic letter is "la"...the way you would pronounce it is by taking word "love" (lúv) and dropping the "úv" part of it. That's the "La" and that's the basic letter. Put a matra on the left and you would pronounce it as "li" (short,as in Lira), put it on the right and you pronounce it as "Lee" (long, as in Slylee). The matra can be put on any letter to get this effect. So for a basic letter "ra", you can write "ri" or "ree" and so on.

In my opinion the "u" on top of any letter gives the "eh" sound. I've written "Jenny" correctly the second time. The "u" adds the "eh" sound to "J" so the "Jeh" would actually be the "ja" (the first letter of her name written in Sanskrit) with the "u" on top. But there's a "nee" after the "jeh". You usually drop the 'h' emphasis from "jeh" if there's something after this type of a letter. So you don't pronounce the word as "jehnee", rather, just "Jenee". But for "Lireh", the "eh" is on the the last letter...so you pronounce it fully with the 'h' effect.

They are so addictive. Oh man, I went with a friend as the support person and ended up getting two tattoos. I got simple designs on the top of both of my calves. I figured it would entice me to wear a skirt more often! =)

I am actually getting my family crest as a tattoo. I am still designing the ring of celtic knotwork going around it. I am planning on getting it in the middle of my back about a 5" circle.
