Too right
I have been involved with several "promotional" entities in and around the Houston area, and never have I been more frustrated than while trying project a more positive light on the talent that seems to be "the usual suspects". I got tired...yes...literally tired of seeing Oakenfold back then...SpaceGirl (who I later found out was a nobody even then) was a more likely attractive offering...The DJ's who really were something to behold were often pushed to the side of the plate, so to speak, in favor of more accessible (read that as cheaper?) fares. My first taste of something truly well thought out was a rave at which Kimball Collins performed (only a 30 minute set...due to a complaintive SpaceGirl wanting to play and then leave) and essentially tore the house down. I have rarely heard a rave crowd boo a DJ taking to the decks, but SpaceGirl had a lynch mob...not a dance-happy crowd.
That line of thought has permeated the conscious workings of the promoters/producers since I have been here. Money talks, and bullshit walks....and the unfortunate side effect of that line of thought is that what usually walks out is some of the best damned talents ever to grace a set of wheels.
I've seen (I think) every major name in the industry (at least once) and my personal collection of music spans every genre (not just electronic) and every decade...I am far from being a self-stylized critic of music, but having 5-10 people (In all honesty, this number is not far off the mark...Houston's promotional team seems to inbreed)repeatedly demonstrate their lack of taste and insight to the scene has become a tad tiresome. One names outshines them all, and I am sure you have heard of / read it elsewhere...This one man believes he is THE reason Houston has a scene at all...he thinks it has been by his herculean efforts alone, and his blood, sweat, and tears that every act that comes to Houston happens.
Sean Carnahan is quite possibly the single greatest arrogance in existence in this city. Having dealt with him directly for many months (back around the time "Transit" exploded all over channel 2) I understood what had been going on for some time...namely, Sean had found a way to exploit a very easy mark...and in turn...generate a tidy profit from it.
I don't know how he managed it, honestly I don't care...I consider him a morally and ethically base person...not to mention a shitty performance DJ in his own right...and yet he manages to "perform" at almost every big event.
In short, perseverance and hope have done shit for this city...and I expect it to only get worse.
