Weird.
I went to high school in suburban Colorado - Evangelical capital of the world, maybe - and it wasn't in our curriculum at all. Interesting how such a significant religious archetype for western consideration didn't make its way into our schedule. I wonder if it was decided against due to content. Or maybe it's considered blasphemy because it's not the literal word of the bible.
As a High School sophomore, we read stuff like The Great Gatsby and The Grapes of Wrath. And a plethora of poetry. Lots of Poe. My teacher was eccentric, but cool in that not-so-cool English teacher sort of way.
Just thought I'd share. |
Maybe the Evangelicals hate the Catholic undertones in Dante? Dunno.
And now that I think about it, I read it junior year... sophomore year we spent on Fitzgerald, Hawthorne, Thoreau, Poe, Hemingway, and Steinbeck.
