Just got back home about 15 minutes ago. Took A LOT of pics.. and I am super tanned (kind of burnt)
First couple days were teh suck because I was so sick. I vomited either the first night, or second night.
Otherwise, it was amazing. Beautiful beaches, beautiful people (Dominican people are so amazing... and the men are sexerific) and amazing weather. I am sad to be back in Canada.

for gods sake, no, there are no market tents selling cooked dogs, and seems like you have not been on downtown santo domingo for a while |
I went to the capital of the province - Higuey, and a couple of other small towns on the way. Yes, it is very poor (compared to North America), and there are a lot of things that are going on that are really different from the western norm. I also noticed that it is very dirty. Garbage is EVERYWHERE. I am assuming that they don't have a very strong garbage disposal program in place. I have never seen so much garbage in my life.
The city of Higuey was so large! They have their street lamps disguised as palm trees, which I thought was pretty cool. They also have a super massive church right in the middle of the city. We were told that the doors to the church cost 2 million dollars. From what it seemed, there is an upcoming election, and the Dominican people are very politically involved. There were huge crowds with flags and signs lobbying others to vote for a specific president. Ivan?
Aside from the garbage, the country was magnificent. White sandy beaches, beautiful vegetation, hot weather with barely any rain, some pretty mountains, and did I mention the amazing beaches?
Things I did:
Drove a speedboat (omg so much fun)
Snorkeled
Boated (Catamarans, speedboats and a paddle boat lol)
Tanned
Danced
Rode on a crazy open concept bus and hung out the back of it
Went to Higuey
Traveled to Saona Island
Went to a "Caribbean swimming pool", which is a sandbar in the middle of the water the is so warm, and shallow. This is where we saw starfish.
I didn't do as much as I was hoping to, but being sick really had me dragging my ass for the first few days.
I got a lot of R&R in, which was nice, and highly needed.
In the future, I would never travel ill again. The pressure in my ears was horrible on the plane, and feeling kind of blah when you can't be in your own bed isn't very pleasant.
I will post up pics when they are uploaded. I don't know if I will bother with that tonight or not though, so don't hold your breath.

Actually during my several visits, I dont think I've ever been to downtown SD. Only to the airport, and then I'm off to the beaches. My experience comes from a random village near the southeast coast. Wish I had more info to give than that... I dont at all mean to insult, but I havent heard the greatest of things when it comes to the DR capitol, so we've never really vested a true effort to check it out. The rest of my fam has been there, but not I. A lot of crime and poverty and nothing really touristy if I remember correctly.
And in a country that has some of the worst trash problems ever and is bordering the poorest nation in the western hemisphere, is it THAT ridiculous for a cooked dog market to exist? I only saw what I saw, perhaps a different animal, but pretty grotesque nonetheless. At least its something unlike the norm, which I guess makes seeing it worth it.
Good to hear you had a good trip BTW, Theresa.
