Ohh, I'm with you now.

Yeah, I don't underestimate the power of self-determination, no matter how foolish it may very well be. I'm certainly not one of those "ya gotta stay positive!!!" kinda guys, but I understand its worth.

When I was in middle school i spent about a week convincing myself the matrix was real. I was extremely close to walking on walls, but did not truly believe yet.

To anyone who thinks that Karma is some cosmic force that determines what will happen to you in the future based on what you do today... you're mistaken. The Hindu concept of Karma is that the TOTALITY of your actions throughout your ENTIRE life comes to a sum of Dharma (harmony with the universe). If your actions through out your life are overwhelmingly contrary to Dharma then you move away from it, if in keeping then you move toward it. The closer you are to reaching this state of harmony at the end of your life determines how you are reincarnated in your next life (gender, cast, class, etc). The key here is this all happens at the END of you life, it is not an instant reward/punishment system.... this instant karma idea is nothing but a misread of the concept or an attempt by persons of non-vedic traditions to make this concept fit with their beliefs.

I suppose what I'm saying is that the type of "karma" being described in this thread is pure and utter revisionist bullshit professed by people who are seeking some sort of cosmic justice, probably in an attempt to confort themselves when they are slighted but unable to enforce justice directly. The Hindu idea of karma, on the otherhand, I will not discount as being invalid; however, I do not believe it to be true.

how does one attain "harmony" with the universe if there isn't some "bean-counter" factoring in your life's choices and how they relate to what it means to be harmonious? ie there's still some kind of quasi-sentience afoot keeping an eye on you is there not?

but youre right, that idea is infinitely better than the bastardised western "understanding".
