my point being, how does claiming that even begin to legitimize their actions?
It was a total war. There was no difference between civilian targets and military targets.
What do you mean Israel never did? There were more Lebanese civilian casualties than Israeli, IDF, and Hezbollah militants combined.
How does total war legitamize Hezbollah actions? Let's see. The IDF invasion...maybe???

i think you are the one not getting the concept of "total war". look it up, you have the internet.

why did the Israelis stop at the Litani?
why did Israel not declare a war?
why did the Israelis ony attack infrastructure and government institutions?
ect. ect. ect.
i not debating the general merits of the war just your assertion of "total war"

EDIT> i know its Hamas in the West Bank and not Hezbollah in Lebanon. just making a point.
thx, i didn't know people were so ignorant to the fact that it actually occurred. It's such an easy tactic for these people to use because they get some reprieve by simply going into a house.

I hope you now understand there is no difference between civilian or combat areas. Total war stipulates they are one in the same, therefore, until you provide a specific instance of Hezbollah using civilian shield tactics, such as putting women and children on the roofs of occupied buildings (like the Taliban do), you are wrong in that assertion.
since it was total war as you claim, then the Lebanese civilian population was a mobilized resource and the killing of those civilians by israel was justified. you clearly don't mean that. perhaps you should understand what total war is before you use the term.
that was not even close to an example of total war. WW1 and 2 are much better examples. In total war, every member of society is expected to provide some support to the war effort. Even if you can somehow twist the meaning of total war to fit your example, it doesn't help because that would make the civilians participants in the military effort.
