I can't answer for sure as to his true intentions of remaining in the rave scene, but I do know that he is a professional photographer and does manage to take some pretty good pics at parties.

The rave culture is still very much alive in California, having two fairly distinctive scenes, LA (Socal area), and the SF and East Bay area. While the quality and quantity of good parties have degraded over the years, there are still a few promoters who manage to throw some exceptional events. Raves don't exactly fit with the mainstream anymore here (Although it did in the early 2000's), the hyphy and emo scenes have taken over on that.

Have a friend that did the same thing years back. Went to raves and took tons of pics. Its been dead almost 3 years now but its still up.
