ahh...the HDs are all the same. just make sure its 3.5". nothing else is necessary. i wouldnt bother with an extra ide controller. they are a waste considering youre more than likely going to replace it soon. or so it seems like you will be. since the 9gb is just the system drive, then id leave it as is. the drives that are on the "shit" rack, just look at the model numbers. if it is a western digital, the number says the size. just remove a zero. so a WD800BBB is 80gb. seagate, ibm, and maxtor both say what they are on there.

well i got the three beeps of doom!

mem went in fine, but the comp wouldnt turn on. my fears are realized, 512 is the max, and the mem is proprietary also...super. i may be able to exchange, but the 256 dell compatible is 57 dollars for one stick.

i may have just blown 50 on something i cannot return, but im not sure i wanna pay 50 or so more to max it out. we shall see, i may just exchange it for 2x256 and see if that works, which it likely will not. hopefully the cpu goes better, should be here tomorrow or so|

there is no such thing as proprietary memory in desktop computers. its all open. did you try just 1 stick?

what about the new cpu?

cpu should be here today or sometime soon.

i tried one stick and two sticks. it looks like i can exchange or get a refund which is good. i KNOW now that 512 is the max, but i think it has to be 2x256 in both slots. i think the one stick of high density 512 is the main problem.

btw this is just the store i bought from, im looking at it from the exchange pov.

its just getting annoying now tho, i dont want to spend too much as i could get a top of the line p4 and motherboard for 130 bucks or so...thats not amazing, but most pentium D or 4 mobos can be upgraded to core 2s and such. my current setup is extremely limiting even if i can get a bit of a boost|

sometimes high density ram does cause problems, but its rare. maybe this is the rare time?

also, the BEST place for max ram amounts is crucial.com. I always tell people with pre-builts to use their site as they get the info direct from the manufacturer. Check there and see what the max ram allowed is. 512mb doesn't sound correct.

I agree, that it's kind of a waste at this point though. I didn't think that there would be a problem. I personally have been around, and built, many computers and NEVER experienced the rare high-density incompatibility. I knew it was _possible_, but since I have never experienced it, I didn't expect it to crop up like this.

What you do from here is kind of, "hmm" now. Because you could, I assume return it for something totally different, or whatever, but unsure of your ultimate intentions in the long run. Sorry for the wild goose chase though.
