I haven't gone too deep into it yet. It *may* be a little early to tell, but I believe it very well may have the fattest OSCs I've heard on a VA. It sounds quite literally identicle to the Prophet. But that was only from a single test of two detuned Saw OSCs. So I may be jumping the gun a bit. I'll post here in a couple months when I've done a full run through and completed patch banks for the PEK, Andromeda, and Blofeld.

wow, for the price i really expected a piece of crap

i'm currently deciding on which bit of hardware to save up for...

atm the contestants are blofeld (around 1000AUD), Virus ti Snow (around 2000AUD), or the Virus TI desktop (around 3500aud)...

i'll probably end up getting one from the US, or ebay because the prices here are ridiculous because of our dollar, and the fact that a huge number of electronics companies are bumping up their trading prices just for Australia (jee thanks )

but yeah, opinions?? is the snow worth the price cut, or is it better just saving the extra money for the proper TI??

On eBay USA, a good deal on the Snow is about $900 USD and a good deal on the Ti desktop is about $1350 USD. So it's up to you. The Ti Desktop can really be thought of as two Snows in one. But both will run the new 3.0 software.

Looking at that price I would say it would probably be better to save up, but then again a Snow is portable and sufficient for a lot of people.

If you're not going to carry it around much then it's probably better to get the TI.

So far the Snow has been perfectly fine for me. Perhaps I should use the word great rather than fine to emphasize it's been better than sufficient. It's been great then, heh.

a lot of the TIs on ebay don't ship O/S as well

but you're right, probably worth saving up...
the other thing is i could get a new snow though, rather than a used TI, and it would still be cheaper.. i'm not TOO fussed about second hand when it comes to something like this, but of course new is always better, and i assume it would come with a warranty if i were to buy it in the country of my residence...

i'll have a ponder... keep my eye out for sales etc.. still months before i'll be getting any anyway

Nice summary, alonzo. I'll throw out some of my thoughts here as well, but I won't bore you with all the synths I've owned since I started buying hardware synths back in the early 80s (yeah, I'm an old fart), just the recent ones. My current hardware lineup consists of:

5) Alesis QS8.2 – 88 weighted keys - I primarily use this as a MIDI controller, but also when I just want to plunk around on a piano - it's actually my primary compositional tool when I first start a song.

I've had one of these too. I think everyone and their mother has had one at some point. The only good thing that came from the Q series was that it put a butt load of cash into Alesis' lap which then financed R/D for the Andromeda.

The QS isn't a real synth, it's a ROMpler, so I didn't include it. :P

Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.
