I put everything on hold to give this a listen after telling you I would get round to it. Just finished it now and I enjoyed it a lot. Technically it was outstanding- the first couple of transitions were the only ones that I actually noticed in a "oh, the track's changing" way. The rest were as smooth as you like. The highlights were the opener, which was a touch of class, and whichever tracks were playing at around 36 and then 47 minutes respectively. I lost touch with the tracklist due to the tightness of the mixing and my lack of expertise in this genre, but those two put big smiles on my face.
Nice touch to close on a classic too. Just about the only thing I felt you could have done differently was introduce Love Story a bit better. It sounds let you let it run into the break when the hook first kicks in (unless I just didn't notice it coming in sooner), which would have done damage on a dancefloor but felt a little abrupt through the headphones, compared to the rock-solid transitions that had built up to it. That's probably just nit-picking though because you're a much better DJ than me- I'd have been happy if I'd made that transition in the same way.
Overall, a very nice little set. It has a good groove running through it peppered with some gorgeous stand-out moments. |
Thanks so much for the thoughts, J - I really appreciate getting feedback from people I know think about music as much as you do.
RE: The tunes you enjoyed, the first was Karu - Maraud Your Ears (Tim Paris) [Edit] and the second was the new Guy J - Under Pressure. The Karu track closed the second disc of Desyn's balance a few years back, but I was always upset he didn't use any of the intro in the mix (which is easily the most awesome part of the tune IMO), and the Guy J tune just reminds me of the kinds of classic "epic prog" that appeared in your epic prog set.
RE: The mix into Layo & Bushwacka - I tried a couple different ways to get that one to work, different phrasings and bassline drops, but couldn't get that thick intro bassline from the Tim Deluxe to play well with the Persuader tune. I definitely feel like I got it as well as I could, but still understand it probably could have been better.
Thanks again for the thoughts, boss

Looks pretty slick Rob, giving it a go. I'll get back to you with comments; I'm sure it will be lovely.
