Lloyd: I'm talkin' about a place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I'm talkin' about a little place called Aspen.

Harry: Oh, I dunno, Lloyd, the French are assholes.

Podolski laughs at Poland passport threat
Germany striker Lukas Podolski has ridiculed a threat by a Polish politician to withdraw his Polish passport by revealing he does not even have one.

The Bayern Munich forward was born in Poland, but moved to Germany as a two-year old and grew up near Cologne.

He scored twice as Germany beat Poland 2-0 on Sunday, prompting Polish politician Miroslav Orzechowski to threaten to take away his passport.

'The funny thing is, I don't even have a Polish passport,' said Podolski in the Kolner Express newspaper.

'The Polish Football Association never showed an interest in me.

'Only when I played for the Under-21s and was in the public eye did they start to make moves.'

Podolski refused to celebrate his two goals against the country of his birth and was seen consoling Polish family members in the stands after Sunday's game.

Despite Orzechowski's comments, Podolski maintains he has and always will have a strong relationship with Poland, although he is fully committed to winning Euro 2008 with Germany, as he showed at the weekend.

'I made a decision for Germany and it was the right one,' he added. 'Still, I have two hearts beating inside me.'

Are you going to go on a rampage about that then?

I wouldn't start crying if a Belgian national beat my team while he was playing for France or Holland. If that's where he has more opportunities, then all the best to him.

Either way, I doubt you'll understand the point I'm trying to make so I'll just leave it at that, and laugh while you rant on the bitterbus.

There are practically countless internationals around the world that play for a country other than the the country of their birth. this whole issue has been debated for years and FIFA are rightful in their current stance to leave it unchanged. There are far more players out there who have spent less time and have less of an affiliation than their adopted country for which they now play compared to Podolski. at least in Podolski's case, he might have been born in Poland and raised in a Polish family, but he's been living in Germany since he was age 2. Growing up there and playing in the German youth system and in Bundesliga, that country is all he's known for virtually his entire life.

Ultimately as long as a player holds citizenship of a specific country, it is that player's prerogative whether or not to play for them. Each player makes that decision based on his/her own circumstances at the time. I'm sure a lot of Canadians are upset at the fact that Owen Hargreaves and Jonathan de Guzman have each decided to play for England and Holland respectively, but their decisions are their own and we only have our own national football association, like Poland with theirs to blame.

As a Polish-Canadian, you're obviously upset by what's happened, but it's no reason to attack the current system of rule concerning international players.
