Has anyone read any books by Haruki Murakami (or is it Murakami Haruki in Nihongo). I just finished The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles it was really cool... very unique writing style, kinda "quirky" for lack of a more appropriate adjective.
I see there are a few fans of Russian Satyre here. Someone mentioned Master and Margarita before, a (somewhat) more explicitly subversive novel by Bulgakov (not to mention a more accessible one) is Heart of A Dog - if you know something about Russian/Soviet history you'll get a hoot out of it.

I love that book and all its sequels, so funny, not deep but funny. I also like Anything and everything by Harry Turtledove. I recommend them to anyone intrested in science fiction/fantasy. His style brings great plots, and superb story tellin and imagry. I'm also a big fan of the Age of Unreason series though I can't remember the author right now.
