Most of them are unable to distinguish between your average chinese and the institution of state, but not everybody. And the there's a tendency, unfortunately, in the West to disrespect that which they don't understand... but in all fairness, that's kind of epidemic to the enitre world, it's just a lot more pronounced here as there is no concept of honor or respcet in Western culture (short of the "honor" of killing other people for your goverments interests, or "respecting" the insitution of state and bending over when it says so). Plus if you've ever notice in the media, Asians (i.e. east Asia), don't get much respect as is evident by all the stereo types that exist about Chinese or Japanese. That doesn't apply to everyone (obviously) but it does a fair number of people. Every minority gets shafted, even white folks get shafted by the system now. But it's politically incorrect to talk about any of it, in fact honesty is policitially incorrect. The Eastern cultures, just like any other cultures, have their fair share of problems and shortcomings too but if you talk about it you somehow become automatically a racist or a brainwashed American (I've personally dealt with accusations of the latter by "my own people," probably because I don't really believe in a concept of "your own people" in the first place). People are assholes no matter where you go or which group you're dealing with, there are obviously exceptions everywhere to, but being good or nice is generally veiwed as a 'weakness' or being honest, especially about political / social issues, generally earns you labels such as being a nut or a radical. The only thing that seems to diminish the effects of stereo types are celebrities in this crazy culture, and the case is a lot more severe in the case of American culture. Most people respect power (in a fearful way not a deeper way), and generally can't tolerate criticism or evaluation of anything they identify with, regardless of what it is. Peace.
EDIT: But not everyone is like that. The most prominent and recognized critics are usually found with in the relevant group itself.
